Load on back bumper

We have a 16xrb and I would really like to put a bike rack on the rear bumper but also heard that it doesn't support much weight. Can anyone tell me the max load on the back bumper of a 16xrb? I will have the spare on there as well.

I installed Safety Struts that increase the load to 400 lbs. They work great.

We thought about doing that on our xrb but decided to opt for a bike rack on the front tongue of the trailer.

I took my trailer to a local custom welding shop and had them add some support bracing on the rear bumper. It ended up being overkill, which was exactly what I was looking for. If I can hang the trailer by the rear bumper now, my bikes won't fall off.

ascbclee,

Welcome to JOF

I believe the "static" weight limit is 100lbs to 150lbs...., your owners manual will have your specific HTT's bumper weight limit. The spare tire weight on the bumper gets subtracted from the weight limit.

Biggest problem with mounting a rack on the OEM bumper is the movement of the rack/bikes while in tow is flexing the thin gauge bumper material and stressing the bumper weldment area.

Didn't think about this.
Its just that the A frame bike racks are pretty expensive.

My sister and her bunch use their trailer floor for a couple of bikes when in travel mode.

Looks like your 16XRB has a great hallway for a couple of bikes. Maybe you are doing this already...

Yeah we have been but it’s getting old loading bikes inside and worrying about them scraping and scratching the cabinets/wood.

We're in the same boat

We've also spoken with a local welding shop (regarding our 16XRB) and they said, no problem to add some stiffening supports and a 2-inch hitch receiver.
Will let you know if we end up pulling the trigger.

Have you looked at tongue mounted bike racks?

Fairly expensive and have to be dismounted if you use the front bunk. I think loading would be harder as the bikes are much higher.

I have a tilting receiver bike rack but don't use it as it is very heavy.

2017 x23b bike rack

This was easy enough to pull off. Total cost $82.00 and a few hours to fabricate. Total weight of mount frame 30lbs (+) 21lbs bike rack.
Materials: Speedy metals $42
welding: $40 (family friend)

Make sure to weigh your rig after doing this to ensure you still have sufficient tongue weight after adding 100+ lbs of rack and bike to the rear of the trailer.

Any weight you add behind the axles reduces tongue weight and could contribute to sway.

Cheers
