Looking for a new TV

We are looking at a few vehicles for a new TV for our Jayco 17z. We are looking at 2015's. The competition has come down to the Ford Explorer and the Jeep Cherokee. The jeep is smaller and more fuel efficient than the Ford and with a 4500lb towing capacity it would easily pull our 3050lb unit.

Does anyone have either of these vehicles? And how do they handle when towing.

Is 3050# from a scale or the yellow sticker? If it's the sticker you will probably be closer to the tow limit. In my experience you will be over the Rear GAWR before you get to the max tow weight. Hopefully someone will post their Cherokee scale weights. It would be handy to have your tongue weight as well.
The CAT Scale is your friend.

Jeep Cherokee or Grand Cherokee?
I towed the 17Z with a 1997 Grand Cherokee V8 and it did just ok, and that vehicle had a 7200lb towing capacity.

I would buy a bigger tow vehicle. The larger tv will make for easier towing & handling, which will give you peace of mind. White knuckled towing is no fun. As others have said, the Cat scale is your friend . Good luck with your decision

Hey bud, I just went through this last year when we purchased the 184bh. We almost went with the 17z-pretty much same weight. I tow with a jeep liberty 2012 with a 5k tow limit. In the manual you will find a frontal area tow limit also. I just make it, but with a wdh its comfortable.A jeep cheerokee I don't think will be enough. I say get a grand cheerokee or the explorer. They rate the towing as if it were a flat trailer. I already had the tv so I had to work around that. I went with the 184 for the lower roof which allowed us the frontal rating clearance, pretty much wind resistance

Thanks for the relies. We picked up the trailer late season last year. We have a 2005 Pacifica right now and need an upgrade. The Pacifica towed ok but with 230kms on her she is a bit tired when towing.

I've not had the entire package on a scale yet, that is for this spring once she comes out of storage.

We have been in the Grand Cherokee as well as the explorer. Liked all 3. The mileage is what we are looking at as it will be a day to day vehicle as well as a weekend tower.

I'll let you know what we choose.

Thats a great combo for a grand cherokee or explorer. Drive a little slower daily to try to make up mpg's

FWIW.... We towed our X23B with a Ford Explorer. It did "O.K." Most of our camping was done less than an hour away and where I live, the terrain is relatively flat.

Would I want to tow it further away, say like the Smokies? NOPE!

We have since traded it for a 2014 Ford Expy, but now we're looking to go with a larger TT. Seems like it never ends......

I have to admit, I was "bullish" when it came to pulling TT's with my Ford Ranger 4x4. "Bullish", meaning it had a 7000 GVWR, so my ultr-lite Jayco was not going to be a problem, and defended it as a valid TV.

My son needed a vehicle. I handed over the Ranger keys to him, and bought a used Full size F150 (2007 STX model). What a difference!!! While the Ranger pulled the TT, the Full size F150 makes it feel like there's nothing behind me. Sturdier, and much better handling and control.

Something to think about.

The jeep is too short a wheelbase.. you would probably have sway problems with it..

im guessing you mean grand cherokee ans the regular cherokee cant have that high of a rating. my friend has the eco diesel grand and its great, good mileage all around. he hasent towed his bumper pull camper with it yet but has pulled a 3 sled enclosed trailer a thousand miles or so and it did that great.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the TT being towed should be proportional to the TV being used to tow it. A smaller hybrid is going to work fine behind a small to midsize TV; get into the larger so called "hybrid" TT's, and the TV is going to feel less stable when pulling it at highway speeds I'd think.

I noticed a large difference between my Ford Ranger and full size Ford F150 when pulling my Jayco SLX16XRB; and this is a small hybrid.

Jeep

Two years ago we used a Jeep Grand Cherokee with a small V8 and towed a 21 ft Trail Lite to Alaska. 8,500 miles N.W.WI. and back. Used an Andersen hitch. The most difficult stretch was Glacier park in Canada. We really had to work at it there, tranny started to get warm and slip. After the first few days in the trip of trying to keep up with traffic I settled in on 55 to 60 max mph.
Lots of zooming down and up rolling hills. Didn't hardly pass anybody in five and a half weeks. 6 to 12 mpg depending on the wind (a big factor) and hills. We now have a 2011 X23B with a weight distribution hitch and are planning on going back to AK.
But with a bigger tv with a bigger V8. A half ton or three quarter ton tv with a bigger V8 is on the menu. The Jeep we used would be ok for just tooling around flatlands with a small camper.

my grand cherokee pulls my 16xrb great, but its the 5.9L one with some help. I also sometimes use my wrangler which gets the job done but struggles with power, weight/size wise its fine it just has no power

In the Grand Cherokee line, look at the diesel options. I'm told they pull much better and get much better milage. When poking about for a Jeep for our 2008 17c, Gross 3,500, the Cherokee #'s came in too low so I looked at the Grand Cherokee.

Just purchased a brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee, V6. (No groaning from some of you!) Haven't had a chance to tow the 16xrb yet, but the Jeep drives like a dream (6200lb towing capacity). Jeep has sway control feature but I will also be using my Equalizer E2 WDH. I am sure you know that the tow package on the Jeep does not include the brake controller. I installed that myself with a pre-made adapter - plug and play, awesome!
