New to Camper Camping - What do I need (Hybrid)?

Hi all,
I'm getting off the ground for the first time and just bought a hybrid (2014 x23b) for my family of 5 (me, wife and 3 kids under 10yo). We're fairly savvy tent campers, but I have no idea about camper camping and what "stuff" I need to be "camper ready". I need help. What do I need to get? Categories of stuff that I'm thinking about are:
  • Setup - leveling, chocks, stability, etc
  • Safety - Don't even know what things I should put here...fire extinguisher?
  • Pipes - sewer, gray water, adapters, hoses (90 water intake elbow)?, etc
  • Wires - Electric, other
  • Antennas - TV antenna?
  • Camping Area - stuff for Awning, lights, etc?
  • Inside - Bed extras,
  • Towing - I'm getting all the stuff from the dealer as part of the purchase, sway bar, weight distr, etc, but what else do I need? Extended mirrors for my Sequoia? etc?
  • Bikes - I'm an avid mountain biker and we have 5 family bikes. I'm thinking of bolting on a 2" RV hitch adapter to the bumper of the camper and putting a bike rack off that. Good idea? Recommendations

Since I know nothing...anything you can share would be great, including best brands of stuff to buy, great websites to buy off, memberships that are worth it, etc.

Thanks in advance. So excited about the camper!!!

JR

Here's a good thread on the top 10 things people buy or find they need to start out.

http://www.jaycoowners.com/showthrea...ight=saltymick

The search window in the upper right hand corner is useful in finding older threads on a lot of questions or topics you may like to read.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your new rig.

Best regards,

My advice is to buy the essentials now, but not too much. Wait a while and you will figure out what YOU need.

Essentials would be nice sewer hose, water hoses, Chocks.

And you cannot put a bike rack on the back of a 23B. Too much weight and the bumper won't support it. I would recommend a front mounted hitch on your TV as another option.

You will need a water pressure regulator . Be sure to put it o the tt side of the water hose, right at the 90 deg fitting , so you don't leave it on the cg faucet. Ask me how I am aware of that fact. lol Larry

Hey Bikester.....

Congrats on your X23B, I know you will really like it. I can tell you we are enjoying ours.

This isn't something you "need", but something that you should be aware of.... It has to do with running the furnace for the first time since the temps will be getting cooler in a few short weeks. You will need to turn the furnace on and open all windows, door, and vents. I even turned all of the fans on. Let the furnace run for a few minutes to burn off any residual dust, oil, etc. There may be a funky smell as well. This procedure "breaks" in the furnace.

I'm saving you the hassle of being waken in the middle of the night by the smoke alarm like we were when we used ours for the first time. This wasn't explained to us by our dealer, it is in the owners' manual, but you really have to look for it.

You might also consider something like the Yakima Crash Pad.

Congratulations on your new HTT.

Setup; get a small level, and keep it in the hold, I also have a small square bubble level mounted on the tongue with silicone marine caulk. When I installed it I very carefully leveled the HTT before gluing it down. Lots of options for leveling such as the plastic blocks or cutup some 2x8”s. I would make sure to have a few for the stabilizer pads. By spreading out the weight you will keep them tighter longer.

Safety, a wimpy fire extinguisher does come with the unit. Think about what you are going to do if trouble will come your way. Such as getting a flat, how are you going to change it. Make sure your lug nut wrench fits your lug nuts as no wrench comes with the HTT.

Pipes; you should be able to get by with nothing new right now, but I do like a straight section of clear sewer tube adaptor to see what is flowing out of the tank.

Antennas, it comes with

Camping area; very much a personal preference. I would recommend some type of mat both outside on the ground and inside in front of the door area.

Inside; I would look at my signature line and look at some of my links for modifications to make the unit a little more functional. Such as I removed the false panel under the J-Sofa, zip tied the piping back against the back wall and that is where we store our shoes. I find the bunk ends very comfortable, but I get a sore back when sleeping on the dinette. If you are making the bunk end beds with fitted sheets have one person outside with the big window screen zipped down and help make the bed, it works great. There as small combo fan/lights for the bunk ends get a set. We rarely use the fan, but the lights are used every night.

Towing; purchase mirror extensions, it is the law to be able to see behind you. Drive slow, the tires are speed rated to 65 mph. Take your time the HTT will be your brakes, and you will feel it stopping the TV (tow vehicle). What WDH are you going with? Make sure you have sway control. Some of them have integrated sway control.

Bikes; do not attachment any bike racks to the bumper. The bumper is really light weight and it is only tack welded to the frame. I have a 2” receiver welded to the frame for my bike rack. It is out of sight and is nice and secure.

If you have not picked up the unit yet, I would recommend requesting to do your PDI before signing the title paperwork, because once you do, the unit is YOURS. If they will not, tell them you want to do a pre walk through first to ensure no major concerns.

Just remember that there will be a LOWES and a WALMART close to where you are camping. They will have the items you find out you will need...

ALot of the places you go to will also have a camp store stocked with all the necessities...

ALot of folks will camp out in the back yard for a few nights just like they would be camping at the camp grounds - no cheating here. Then you can figure in REAL TIME what you are going to need...

You can connect your camper to your garage 120VAC 15-amp receptacle by using a RV30A-15A "long" adapter from WALMART. This will run everything in your 30A trailer but you will have to watch the high wattage items like the air conditioner or the microwave as you can only run one of those at a time otherwise it trip the garage breaker...

This is neat to have so you can pack up the trailer before trips and clean things up when you get back. It is also kinda neat for us the camp in the back yard sometimes. great place to watch some NASCAR or NCIS on the HDTV...

Grandkids have a ball here sleeping over night in the camper... Or we sleep in the camper and give them the house haha...

Agree, don't go out and buy tons of stuff you may or may not need.

As Roy mentioned, try to camp somewhere close to town, or in the driveway. Then start the "list", it may take a few trips, but you will soon have everything you need. I would also suggest not "borrowing" stuff from home, get stuff just for camping. This way it is always in there and you don't have to remember to take it.

You know what????

We've had our hybrid for over a year now and it seems we keep adding to the list, instead of the list getting shorter!

I`ve found that some stuff I bought gets used all the time and some hardly ever. I agree with some of the others, do not go out and buy everything at once other then the essentials.

Yeah, that does tend to happen. I'm not sure the list ever ends, we were tent campers for years, about 4 years ago we bought our first popup and we still occasionally add something to the list. Every so often we do go through stuff and take out the things we "thought" we needed but never actually use.

Spare fuses, light bulbs (consider converting the bulbs to LED's).
duct tape, elec tape, VOM.
Consider Popup Gizmos.
I have a tool box dedicated to the TT.
After you've made a few outings you can think about an electric tongue jack (I love mine) and a cordless drill for lowering/raising the stab arms.
I scoured this site for a couple of months prior to taking possession of our TT (X23B) and pre-bought lots of "stuff" for the TT, most of which I have used, some I've never used but keep "just in case".

I agree. Almost everywhere I camp there is a camp store nearby that will sell anything I didn't realize I needed. It may cost a little more but I didn't have to buy everything somebody else thought I would need.

You guys are all great. So helpful. I've been reading the comments and then looking at campingworld.com (looking, not buying), so I get a feel for all the things you are talking about. So helpful. Great advice about the heater!!!

As for the WDH - I bought this through the dealer, as part of the purchase...he said all I needed was the 2" Class III receiver...and he was going to install the electric brake device, sway bar(s), and WDH). They had a demo of it at the dealer. Looked good, but what do I know. I think the brand is Reese. Does that make sense?

Knickerbocker - I would love the crashpad, but I don't have a pickup...if I did, I would defiantly go that route.

Jagiven - would love to know more about your welded receiver to the frame. Is it off the back of the TTH? I want to have this done...can't do it myself, but would be worth taking it somewhere to have it done. Can you tell me more?

Some items we leave in the camper are a long sleve shirt for everyone, at least a light weight coat.some cheap plastic ponchos,a pair of water walker type shoes.
The water proof shoes come in handy if it rains and going to the shower house.
