Parallel Honda eu2000i not for sale in Canada?

Hey everyone, I've been in the market for either a Honda 3000 or two Honda 2000's in parallel. I've read a bunch of forums comparing the two options and decided to go to my local dealer for some pricing.

The dealer had no idea what I was talking about when I brought up hooking up two 2000's. He said you can link two 1000's but not the 2000's. I knew better than this from reading about the hundreds who have. I left and phoned Honda Canada and was told only the American models can run in parallel due to Canadian electrical standards...

I found a dealer about 6 hours south of me who brings in American units for $133 less ($1166) than the standard Canadian (sale) pricing ($1299)... I'd hate to buy from them and get screwed around trying to get local warranty work done. I've also found a local guy who has two American model 2000's with parallel cable and DC cable for $2k! BUT, as mentioned I'd hate to buy used American models and need warranty work and get screwed around...

Anyone have any thoughts, comments, suggestions regarding this or should I just buy a 3000 and call it a day?

Cheers!
Wayne

I just went through the same issue (although my Honda dealer is close to home) and decided on 2 -2000's. I picked up the Companion yesterday, and will add another 2000i later to be paralled in. The upside is more total watts, easier lifting, and a choice for how much power I need on a per trip basis. The down side is having to maintain and deal with two generators. For me that's not a concern, but I enjoy doing those kinds of things.

You have a legitimate concern about the warranty, but hopefully you won't need it. Honda has an excellent performance record.

When I was researching generators, I came across the Lafan brand, made in China. I'm told that Lafan does a lot of work for Honda (don't know if that's true). When you look at a Lafan next to Honda, the only noticeable difference is the color. I didn't feel like "experimenting" with a clone in case there are differences you can't see. Lafan is 60% of the cost and comes with the same 3 year warranty.

So I get my Honda home and notice the owner's manual is printed in China. That jump started my imagination.

Edit: That is not a slam on China. China, like other manufacturing countries, IMO makes all different levels of quality. They produce what we are willing to pay for.

Yeah I started looking at Kipor generators after learning we have a dealer about 45 minutes from here. The Kipor dealer said they sell the parallel kit for their 2000 models as well which means I could go that route. I watched some you tube videos if the 2000 and 3000 model Kipors and it sounds like the 3000 was a little quieter or had a more dampened sound.

Considering I won't be using it for commercial use and only camping 12-15 times a season the Kipor might win out over the Honda...

I certainly don't know all the canadian standards, but I can't imagine you would have a problem with the US versions. First of all, as has been mentioned, the Honda are super reliable and rarely have issues. Secondly, there are a lot of snowbirds in the US southern states during the winter...are you saying should one of them buy a pair of Honda 2Ks in the US and take them home with them then experience an issue that they are stuck holding the bag? I doubt it, I imagine any of honda's dealers would be happy to repair a honda product and if its under warranty honda would honor that warranty.

Buy the gen's in Canada... then order in the parallel kit from the states.. that way you have the warranty on the gen's and the parallel kit... JUST DONT tell the Cdn dealer you have the P kit.. and unplug it before you take it in for warranty work..

Just be sure that the gen you purchase has been through the recall & fixed. Larry ( see the recall thread)
