Plumbing Question

While de-winterizing my camper yesterday and learning how the plumbing works I came across a valve in the plumbing I cannot figure out why it is there. I did establish that having it closed did give me hot water continually. When I had the valve in the open position I was getting warm and cold water in intervals. Other than that I cannot figure out why and what this valve is for.

That's the bypass valve for the HWH. In the pictures, it's closed and ready to use. When the knob is lengthwise with the tubing, it's opened and in winterization mode.

Keep it like that for normal use. Make sure the hot and cold lines are open though.

As you have heard that is the water heater bypass valves. when the Tee handle is crosswise to the pipe the valve is closed.

You always want to bypass the water heater when you winterize the system.

Many people who think the water temperature is to hot, will crack open the bypass valve to temper the hot water.

Often when we are boondocking we don't use the water heater, and we just bypass it, and leave the tank empty. Reason being, on our HTT the WH is in the opposite end and corner of all faucets and we waste a lot of water trying to get hot water.
