Propane Off

We always travel with our propane turned off at the tanks. I leave everything in the fridge and just turn it off when I go out the door the last time. I've never seen the temperature rise more than a few degrees while traveling. I make sure that I don't put any room temp drinks or food in on the day we will travel. Anything I want cold I put in at least a day before. Sometimes I will put a couple of frozen water bottles in just to help keep it colder for the longer travel days in hotter weather. This is how we do it but everybody has their own opinion and I'm ok with that!

One thing I've done a few times, is to put some dry ice in the freezer compartment the day before you leave. It will keep frozen foods frozen, and the refrigerator will be cold when you get to the camp ground the next day.

Except that all portable propane tanks in use today (larger than 1lb) would have an emergency shutoff in the valve assembly. This shuts off propane flow if the gas begins to escape too quickly (say a severed line). These have been required for long enough now that I would expect that the last of the tanks that did not require this feature have passed their maximum number of recertification periods.

If the tank itself is punctured, then it really doesn't matter what state the valve was in.
