Registration in TV or TT

I have a silly question that I have been unable to find a definitive answer to. We just received our plate and registration for our new Hybrid and currently confused if the registration needs to stay in the TT or should it go into the tow vehicle? Or does it even matter?

Thanks!
-Jake

Never really thought about this - have always kept the registration papers for the trailers in the TV.

I keep them in the TV. If stopped for some reason they are readily available rather than having to go digging through the TT to try and find them.

Mine is taped inside the cabinet door closest to the entry door. Never happens but you could pull the rv with another tv. Think I'll make a copy and put it in the tv with the truck registration.

I do the same. I keep the registration taped to the kitchen cabinet closest to the door. Just in case it's being towed by another TV.

In NYS you need to be able to produce it in a traffic stop or a DOT check. I have always kept it in an envelope with the TV reg & the insurance card(s), in the glovebox.

Agree that the most likely time you might be ask to produce the registration is while you are on the road. That said, if your rig is set up on a seasonable site and you are challenged to show the registration by a ranger you might not be there with the tow vehicle. After my previous post, I immediately went out and made a copy and placed it with my TV registration. If they want to see the original its in the TT cabinet w/ the TT insurance card. I know, if it burns to the ground, I have a copy of the insurance card in my TV as well.

My RV reg is in the TV. On work trailers I put it in a PVC pipe and lash it to the tongue so I have it with any TV.

Yep.

A couple reasons that I see for keeping the original trailer documentation readily available in the tow vehicle.

* No need to aggravate an officer of the law while you bumble around.

* For safety reasons I prefer to minimize the time which I am pulled over stopped on a roadside or busy highway, not extend it.

* Why open the trailer for inspection and give an officer more things to see than is necessary? (Ok. Maybe I'm paranoid.)

Thanks to comments here, I now see that there is value in keeping copies of the documentation in the trailer. I need to do that.

FWIW. vic

For those who said "The trailers not going anywhere w/o the truck".... Here is my Boy Scout response... Be Prepared!

I would have been of the same opinion prior to having a transmission blow up at the tail end of a trip. It was a five day repair at the end of a trip and we had to borrow a friends truck to finish the tow home... Across the Canada / US border. I promise, no matter how level headed you are, transferring documents is NOT your first priority.

I like the logic of keeping the original registration and an original insurance in the TT and a copy of the registration and an original insurance card in the TV. My decisions are based in part on the Ontario Highway Traffic Act. A photocopied registration (Front and Back) is sufficient to provide to an officer but an original insurance card is required. My company provides 2 cards each year and can send more if requested.
