Replacing light bulbs

2014 X23B here. I took the clear cover off a light looking to just pull out a light bulb to order replacement LEDs off Amazon. I discovered it was anchored in a funny base and firmly attached with 2 wires.

I'm sure I'm missing something but how do you get them out? I see the little tongue tab to undo but that's not enough.

Thanks!

Pull on just the bulb.. you are looking at the base... the bulb has a glass socket that plugs into the base...

Red face bulb

You know I pulled on it and became afraid I'd yank the bulb out leaving a base behind...like what happens to little Christmas lights sometimes.

So if I grasp the bulb and pull on it, the bulb will exit the base. Then I can look for an LED replacement for the bulb.....which I should be able to find.

Correct? Just to nail this down

This might help. After lots of searching, we settled on these at Amazon: LED Bulb lamp Super Bright Warm White DC 12V. DH is in the home energy efficiency business so we knew we wanted 'warm' and soft LED lights. After much research, he determined that for OUR purposes/needs - this was the best fit. Of course ... it is all personal choice and you'll probably get many additional recommendations.

These paddle style are better as they put more light out to the room rather than up into the backing of the housing..

I went with these myself. Essentially they are all the same. This type has a 3m sticky backing and came with 3 different types of mounting sockets. The ones in the photo, a twist socket for like Car Bulbs and some that look like they would replace glass fuses. LOL

X2 Seann. I have 20 of those installed in my TT, and all have worked perfectly for months. Great color and plenty of lumen output.

One recommendation I have for anyone replacing bulbs of any kind is to lightly coat the bulb base with dielectric grease before inserting into the connector. I've had a few bulbs that began to flicker in the past, and found that the wires on the bulb base were arcing inside the connector.

In the presence of oxygen, the base wires corrode/melt/burn when arcing. Dielectric grease seals the electrical connection from the air, preventing the corrosion/burning problem.

You can buy small tubes of dielectric grease at any auto parts store for a few bucks. It's good stuff for battery connections, too.

Again thank you all for the helpful input.

My wife and I have a difference of opinion on the color output. I like the day light, and she prefers the warm white.

Which means we are going with the warm white....so perfect!

That's funny because we have the same negotiated resolutions in my Home.
But in this case, I just don't like the Day Light Aura to the lighting. It would drive me nuts after awhile. The Warm is very similar to our existing lighting.

Success!

I'd like to thank the academy, my parents, the good Lord and my friends here at the owner's forum.

I have extracted the light bulb and will be ordering the replacements. You're all invited over for dinner when they come in.

Thanks again!

They do not get hot.. I believe the laser temp reading gun showed about 90 degrees.

DITTO!

But we did compromise!

Almost all the bulbs are modified Warm White bulbs that have a regular old automobile 5611 base (BA15) and I modified them to the 921 base that plugs into the normal ceiling light fixtures, using the plastic bases from first batch of cheap China LED's. The one in the picture below is the brightest WARM WHITE bulbs (66 LED's) I could find as they are over 300 Lumen, where the average for the others I looked at were about 160 Lumen. DW was unhappy with the original Warm White LED's as they were dim and difficult to read by. She is happy now!! And that means I am HAPPY now! The LED's are around 2800 Kelvin which makes them perfect for the TT.

The only lights that are not Warm White lights are above the kitchen sink and in the bathroom. They are ultra bright Day Light LED's, which makes it so much easier when preparing meals in that area and the ones in the bathroom help with my shaving shaving, as my eyes are half closed in the morning.

The BA15 base is a direct replacement for the fixture above our kitchen table. The 2 bulbs give PLENTY of light for reading or what ever else we are doing at the table.

They really brighten up the TT with the extra Lumen.

The price has been reduced to $9.99 from the original $12.99 price, old picture.. sorry.

Just my thoughts,

Don

Wow that is an interesting solution. I am wondering about the brightness of what's coming. I'll report back.

I just ordered the paddle ones that Seann45 mentioned; hopefully they will be as bright as originals. Does anyone know if the bulbs are the same in the round lights over the kitchen and dinette as the rest? I didn't check those, and now am concerned if the bulb is vertical in those, or horizontal like the double fixtures.

I wonder if the paddle version would be good for the brake lights?

Just to update you on my next LED project....
Each year I improve on our TT's LED lighting. Started out with the cheap Chinese versions and watched them go one by one and start to heat up at the end of their life. So, to keep up with new and improved products that will also meet our needs I end up rewiring different base models, because they do not have the same Warm White (around 2800 - 3000 Kelvin as house lighting is), with greater Lumens. So in the near future I will be purchasing a few of these to try out. My current modified LED's are 300Lumens (still could be brighter) and the ones below are 600Lumens. So I guess I will be pulling out the old solder and soldering iron to adapt them the the 921 Wedge Base fixtures in the TT. That should do the trick and make DW even happier. They even make a dimmer for these, but at $25, we can do with out them.

Here is a link that has Warm White 500 - 550Lumens and the Wedge Base adapters, for anyone interested. I will probably purchase 1 or 2 of these also.

For those interested in a BRIGHT (550Lumen) WARM WHITE LED that has adapters for different bases (including the Wedge Base) check these out. I decided last night I will purchase a few of these (and forget about adapting different LED bases to the Wedge Base) to test out and will let you know how they are. They should be a lot brighter than my 300Lumen LED's that I now use. May even buy the dimmer switch for it.

COB04-WW Warm White Elite Series Super Bright COB LED Plate - M4 Products

Will add a little more load to the batteries, but they can handle it.

Has anyone tried this LED? Let us know your opinion..
