Tent end and popup gizmos

Just got back from our first trip with or used 2013 x17a, have a lot of questions but not all hybrid related. Stayed dry during a 10 hour rain shower without the popup gizmos installed thank goodness. Question, I always hear that your not to touch the tent as it can cause leaks, if I install the popup gizmos could this lead to leaks around the edges of the popup gizmos?
Thanks

Haven't had any problems after using mine. I think the top surface is a vinyl of some kind, it's the sides that are fabric and might leak as you suggest but I haven't had any.

The vinyl portion won't leak if you touch it, the canvas window covers may, but only if something is right on them. Even then, about the most that will happen is it may get damp.

Pop up gizmos wont cause leaks. I have a set for a 17Z for sale. Used a total of 10 nights last year. We traded so we don't need them anymore. They made a huge difference during our days with them tho and highly recommend.

Have used gizmos when we owned our pop up and they really did help keep the heat down in the summertime. As far as the sides of your bunk ends check to see what they are made of. Mine were made of Sunbrella this type of fabric will breathe letting out the moister but will not let it in.

PUGs won't cause or save you from leaks.

You can touch the roof all you want - the material is impervious to water. The canvas ends can be treated with Scotch Guard (as I have successfully done, using up to 3 coats - basically empty the can allowing drying between each coat) after which you can touch them and there would be no wicking.

The no-touch approach is more for the lightweight nylon (or whatever they are made of) tent material you find on tents.

PUG will not make your tenting leak. It is a good rule of thumb not to tough the tenting. You will be leaving oil from your skin on the tenting and dirt will bond to the oil easier than it will to the tenting alone.

I went with the poor man GIZMO's being 9X12 tarps on my off-road popup tent ends. I put the ends of the tarp up using the roof rain gutter before I raise the top... Then I tie off using stretch ropes... Solves the hot/cold and too much light problem associated with the tent ends...

The WALMART low cost light weight tarps last two seasons - can change colors to spice things up... Really helps out when having to put the roof up.down during the rain... Can do most of the work standing under the tarp.
