tongue jack

so, the tongue jack on our camper does not have any kind of plate or support underneath it....do i need one? I saw a tongue jack stand on amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Valterra-A10-0...er+accessories

Not sure i understand the purpose of this. Should i get something like that or something similar? Like a footplate?

thanks

With the wheel removed, this provides some stability when the tongue is down; the "open" tube itself would cut into the soft ground or asphalt. I've seen some just use a block of wood.

You might think the jack tube would eat into it, but it doesn't, and there's a ton of support material under the area where the jack tube sits. I haven't used it with my new trailer yet mostly because it was stored with the rest of our gear so I didn't have it nearby at the time, but my old trailer had an 1100lb tongue weight, which is fairly heavy for a travel trailer.

A 6" scrap of 2x6 is more that adequate to keep all but the largest TT's jack from cutting the pavement or disappearing into the mud/soil.
