Does anyone pull their camper with a 4x2 vechicle? I have a X23B and I have been looking at a new Ford F-150 4x2... Thoughts?

Based on a quick look at the specs of the model indicated, a 2WD truck will pull it just fine. I would get the 3.5 EB, not sure if the max tow option(s) are available in 2WD but should be. 4WD trucks lose payload capacity due to the additional gear case on the front axle.

If you boondock, then you might want to consider the 4wd trucks.

I have a Jeep and towed with it or a predecessor for 7 years. It that time I only used the 4 wheel drive a few times. Once for a rising creek, a few times for loose gravel hills in campgrounds and once for snow. In all those cases I probably could have gone through without 4X4 use.

4X4 capability adds cost, weight and reduces mileage.

Your real questions should be:

Will I need the 4X4 to go where I want to go.
Will a 4X2 have adequate towing capacity to haul my RV.
Are the cost to buy, maintain and fuel efficiency worth the it.

As the owner of a 2wd pickup I would tell you to get 4wd. The lack of weight on the rear end when not loaded is so light the truck breaks traction easily. In any snow it is terrible

We towed our X23B with the Expedition which was marginal but worked well enough. I expect an F150 will have more payload on the rear axle and will work fine.

You don't say where you live. My truck is horrible in snow in 2WD. Even light snow, I use AWD (Automatic 4WD) to get traction.

We pulled our x23b with the 3.5 eco boost. Lots of power and torque and good mileage. We just have the standard tow package with the 3.55 differential. We just upgraded to trailer that is 1200 lbs heavier and still no problem towing.

I towed a x213 for 6 years with a FWD Chevy Traverse. No issues what so ever. I dialled in my WDH to make sure my front tires had good traction. Braking and accelerating were no problem

I am not worried about the snow as I have another vechicle for that. I just wanted to know if the 2WD could pull the camper. Here is the engine information below....

Is this the Eco-boost with the Turbo Charger? If so you won't have any issues. Most 1/2 ton truck with pull the X23B just fine. My X20E is the baby brother to the X20E, it only weighs 200# less. My truck pulls it with ease.

BTW, Auto-stop takes some getting used to. My wife's Buick Encore has it. We bought it July and I'm finally just getting used to it to the point I don't really notice it.

Nope, the EB is 2.7 or 3.5L. I've read reports or posts on other forums of the 2.7L EB being a good motor for towing, but I would still go for the 3.5L EB, never have to worry about running out of TV until you get up in the heavy weight TT's. The 3.5L EB with MT can handle up to 10K they say. My rig below tows like a dream IMO.

Speaking for my self and I am 100% that everyone will agree with, I don't tow in 4x4. I have option of 4x4 when I get stuck going up gravel/ snow cover roads. Normal everyday towing, my vehicle stay in 4x2. Even AWD vehicles normally operate on 4x2 and when it senses wheel slippage will it engage 4x4 unless you have Subaru with symmetrical AWD.
So yes you can tow in 4x2 and 99.99999999% of the time that is what every one is doing too.

This is not the Ecoboost engine.

Honestly I don't think you'll be happy pulling with the 3.3L. It just doesn't have the guts the other engines do. While it probably has more hp/tq than say the 80s engines it will suffer on the hills.

My 2.7L Ecoboost pulls either my 3500 lb. trailer or 4500 lb. boat with no problem. I used to have a 3.5L Ecoboost and I really don't notice any difference--except the gas mileage is better!

As long as you don't care about snow, you probably won't miss the 4 wheel drive. The weight of the trailer on your rear axle should give you plenty of traction except in extreme circumstances.

I pulled my first 23' trailer with a 4x2 Silverado 1500 and my current 32.5' TT with a 4x2 F-250. I don't go on the beach and the only time I've had any slipping was leaving a very steep driveway when it had just started raining. The slipping lasted a second and then the truck made the climb.

Seldom dies anyone need 4wd, just the boondockers or if the CG is very wet and muddy/slick. 2wd will get the job done if the truck is spec'd out properly.

My buddy bought a used Titan 4x2, got a great deal on it because it was a 2wd in Maryland. He bought this pretty exclusively for towing and for light hauling around the house. He doesn't plan to camp in the snow or weather. If we camp and have a muddy site, most of us in the group have diesel 4x4's and can pull him out.

Pulled a WhiteHawk 29REKS for a couple of years with a 4x2 Tundra and had no problems whatsoever. That said, I was careful about not getting myself into a position that I'd potentially get stuck.

Current truck is a 4x4, and I've used the 4WD a couple of times when trying to get going up hill on wet grass or loose gravel. I could probably have gotten away without it, but why take the risk of tearing up the grass/road.

No problems at all here pulling with my 2013 F150 4x2. Def get the towing package and when in Drive set the towing feature to trailer for better mileage. I just drove 1K miles through Florida a couple weeks ago and got 14 mpg.
