Trailer Licensing

I bought my new HTT in California in 2014 and it was licensed in that state using my address in Arizona. That was a year ago. Now I have received my renewal from CA. Do I need to renew in CA or should I register my HTT in AZ? Oh yes, I think the cost in AZ is almost twice that of CA!

I believe a trailer (or any vehicle operated on public roads) use the same rule; wherever your primary residence is state wise, is where you get your registration/tags issued from.

I am then curious as to why my HTT was not originally licensed in AZ when I bought it. The renewal I received from California where I bought it sent it to my home address in AZ so they know where I live???

Maybe that's a CA law to make sure they collect their sales taxes?

CA doesn't care. BUT, I'll bet if you look into it, you'll find that under AZ law, you were required to license it in AZ, pay AZ license and registration fees etc., then ask CA for your money back.

There are some some reciprocity (?) rules between some states regarding taxes. But, like DocBrown said, CA probably wanted to be sure they got their money first. And they really don't care if you didn't obey the law in AZ.

Oldmanaz is correct. You need to register the unit in AZ and pay the sales tax and collect the difference from CA. One saving grace when you file AZ tax you can write off part of the registration fees paid in AZ. According to the AZ law any vehicle or towed vehicle needs to be registered within 30 days once in AZ. Not everyone follows it.

Our new tags are due in July, about fainted on the amount, $422 a yr. for a 2014 Eagle. Not looking forward to that one.

Where does the HTT live most of its time? Or did you just buy it in CA and then brought it home to AZ? If you store it in CA or have it parked in CA, such as on a seasonal site, then CA may claim that is should be licensed in CA.

Personally I would call the DMV main number for both states and ensure you are properly licensed, if not a cop could tag you for improper registration.

My gut thought is the dealer did not setup the temporary license paperwork properly for transport to AZ.

I have a friend that has a cabin in WI, lives in MN, his truck is registered in WI, as it spends most of its time at the cabin in WI, all the registration information is sent to his place in MN. It is fully and properly licensed.

Az, along with many other states, will compare data bases. If you vote in Az, declare it as your home, then you need to register your RV in AZ. The fines, taxes etc, can be huge if your caught. I know several who would register their vehicles, RV etc in South Dakota to save $.. when caught it cost more than if they just followed the law in the first place.

Also most states, if you purchase and take delivery in that state, have to charge sales taxes etc. When we purchased ours in Indiana, , it was delivered to Michigan, (5 miles away) and hence, we paid taxes in our home state... Az.
