Water through Canvas

Hi all,

I just purchased off a private owner a 2015 X23B. This is out first trip out and of course it is pouring. It has been about 30 hours of rain so far. The canvases were both very clean and the prior owner stated he cleaned them ever year. The front canvas appears to have water leaching through the canvas roof. At first we thought it was humidity. But the droplets seem to large and too much for that. Any ideas other than the canvas has lost water seal? Can we reseal the canvas or is it shot?

Thanks ,
X23b newby

Hi and congratulations on your X23B! I live in the desert, so not much experience with long duration rain, but I’ll take a stab at helping anyway.

If you wipe off the drips, do they appear again evenly dispersed across the canvas? Or are they running down maybe from where the canvas attaches to the trailer?

As far as condensation, are there people sleeping in that area? And is it colder outside than inside? Is the moisture more in the morning than in the afternoon? Those things may all lead to increased condensation, which is not necessarily wrong.

Since it’s raining, maybe you’ve shut all the vents and windows? If so you’ll need to crack open your vents or windows if able, in order to keep some airflow, even at 100% humidity (rain). Might not go much, but could help some.

Do you have Pop-up gizmos? They can help you put a cover over top of the tent end roofs and can help keep moisture off of them. It’s not a rain tight seal where the PUGs meet the trailer, but it will definitely help keep most of the rain off. Do a Google search ad. You’ll see. I have a pair and they’re great for rain and heat (and sunlight in the morning)

Ok well those are the things I can think of without being there. I hope it helps.

You can reseal the canvas, there are multiple products available and as Fourkid&abeagle said buy a set of Pop-up Gizmos, they will also help with the heat or chill.

That looks a lot like heavy condensation to me. Have you been cooking or boiling water/coffee inside your camper? If you've been using the exhaust fan hood over the stove is the flapper on the vent outside unlatched?

x2. We had that in our popup if the weather was colder outside than inside, Open a window a little and it will help.

I installed a MaxxAir vent cover on our X23B and the vent lid stayed open and we never had a condensation issue. Our tents were fabric coated with vinyl IIRC and wouldn’t leak unless the vinyl was failing. We also had PUG’s.

Condensation from humidity. You have to vent the trailer at night. We've had it that heavy in our old Kiwi 17a during hard rains. Leave a flap corner open at night, or crack a window. When we had our X20E (baby brother to the X23B), we found leaving the small window above the sink open worked great. In 9 seasons we only had a small amount of condensation on the dampest, rainiest nights.
