Both my 5 and 8 year olds can sit up in the bottom bunks. My 5 yr old can sit up in the top bunk too but not the 8 year old. Next time I go to the trailer I will measure. BTW, they are plenty long too. An adult could easily sleep in all bunks.

2015 x254

I have a question about the ground clearance of the 2015 x254. We are looking into purchasing one and it appears the 2015 is lower than the 2016. Just curious to know if you have had any ground clearance issues.

Yes, the 2015 is lower. We ordered our 2016 right at the model year changeover. We saw the 2015 in person and I did not like how low it was. If you special ordered it you could add the 2" suspension lift kit. That lift came with the 2016 models. We do not have any clearance issues with our 2016. The total height difference from ground to top of a/c is 111" in the 2015 vs. 120" in the 2016. I am not sure where all the extra height is coming from, if they did more than 2" in suspension or what. I could measure under ours if you like next time I have or visit trailer.

I'm in the market for a new trailer. I'm a family of 7 (2 adults and 5 kids age 15, 13, 11, 3 and 1). We currently have a small popup and use a text as well. Also tow with a 2003 Chevy Express that can tow 6500lbs. I like the look of the x254 since it has bike storage as well as bunks (so I don't have to listen to arguing about who sleeps on the inside of the bed). What years did Jayco make the x254? Are the any others that are similar in floor plan from Jayco or other manufacturers? Are there any cons to the unit?

I think it would be way too much for your TV. We had a half ton (Ford Expedition) originally which towed up to 8900#. Even though tt is only 6000# GTWR it all has to do with payload and acceptable performance. Check your payload capacity of your Chevy Express. Will need at least 900# for tongue weight (15%.) We upgraded to a 3/4 ton and it is a much, much better tow.

I was not able to find any other quad bunkhouse lightweight trailers and I searched! No cons for us so far. Bigger kids more comfortable in bottom bunks (I have 17 and 14 yr olds.) Bought rails from IKEA so littler kids can sleep in top bunks.

Thanks. According to the manual, my max tongue weight is 1500lbs. 6000lbs is the max, isn't it? Would dealers let me pull a trailer before I buy it to see how my vehicle handles it?

Do you mean payload? Payload should be listed on a sticker inside driver's door jamb. Payload includes the weight of trailer on hitch (tongue weight) plus passengers and cargo in vehicle. For half tons it's usually less than 1700#.

Most dealers will not let you take a test drive. It sucks, because what that means is the first time you get a chance to see how your TV deals with the trailer is after you've signed the papers to buy the trailer.

To those who have the X254... how are you liking the dinette/bed setup? Our X213 has the small dinette with jacknife sofa across from it. We love the our coach but doesn't offer much floorspace at the rear for moving around.

If the table isn't there, does it open things up a bit? I'm certain I could convert/build something similar. Thanks!

We love the U-shaped dinette. Was a requirement when we were shopping. Our whole family (6) and even a couple extra can sit there together. When we have visitors we put a foldable chair in the open space. We always have table set up but when not using turn it sideways for easier access to bed. If it was not set up at all yes, there would be extra floor space but not sure what you'd do with it.

Thanks for that! I'll definitely explore making this change. I wonder what I could source from Jayco directly... cushions and maybe table. I prefer building the structure myself and making it stronger.

Hey everyone! New to the forum. I'm looking at X254 and have read numerous other posts on this model on this forum and can't seem to find an accurate tongue weight for the X254 when loaded with the bare minimum (propane, batteries, and maybe even some fresh water).

I'm looking to tow it with a diesel Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 720 lbs tongue weight (would like to stay under 620 for the dog and weight distributing hitch which will lower the 720), and a max tow capacity of 7,200 lbs which most definitely won't be the limiting factor.

Any real world numbers out there for the 2016 model (which had a significant jump in tongue weight spec)? Also, with the wheels as far back on the trailer as they are would 10% tongue weight target be too little to prevent sway? In my head it would seem the further back the axles are on the trailer the better from a sway perspective....

Thanks in advance, looking to snag one sometime in the next month while they're still left.

Honestly I think it's too much trailer for your tow vehicle. I have not weighed the tongue but to be safe you want to plan on 15% of GTWR which puts it around 1K.

We tried to do what you're doing figuring minimum tongue to tow with our Expedition. It towed it fine (except uphill we crawled a bit) but the rear sag for us was pretty bad. Maybe a jeep has better suspension. However our Expedition's tow rating was a bit more than yours at 8900#. We ended up upgrading to a 3/4 ton and it is a much more comfortable and less stressful ride!

Hey to you and welcome to the forum.

"In my head it would seem the further back the axles are on the trailer the better from a sway perspective...." while true, the tongue weight would increase significantly.

Hi there - looking at a used x254 2015 and the floor is really soft - flexes when we step on it. Does anyone else find this?

I don't know if this thread has any life left in it but I just came across a brand new 2016 x254. Here it is February, 2018. The way it's equipped, the MSRP has it at $26,154. Without any of the fees or tax or anything else they may think to tack on, it's being offered at $16,211. Does that sound like a good ballpark price to start with?

We bought our 2016 in 2016. Ordered it in fall of 2015 for $21,300 before fees. We ordered with a few added options such as the larger A/C unit, enclosed underbelly, power package, customer value package (don't remember what that entails.)
Hope that helps!

It does!. It has the 13,500 btu a/c in the customer value package, a sink cover and aluminum rims as ad-ons. I wouldn't mind having that belly cover. I did not see a power package nor a power tongue jack listed on the msrp invoice either. I may look into that as well. The dealer is supposed to get back with me on a 'bigger' package tomorrow. That will include the weight dist. hitch and anything else to get me down the road that I can't steal off my pop-up. I have three little ones in retirement that we adopted that this camper looks ideal for. I have a 2012 Toyota Tundra Crewmax to haul it with too if I buy it. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

I made my purchase today for a brand new 2016 x254. Here it is 2 years later (Feb. 2018) and I found it sitting on a dealer lot in southern Mid Michigan so I got the 2-year warranty to go with it. The out-the-door price after everything was added up was $17,600. That included sewer lines, a distribution hitch, taxes any additional prep work needed and a few other add-on trinkets that should get me rolling down the road ready to drop it at a campground somewhere. I pick it up on Feb 27th. Now I get to have the celebration all of you were hooting and hollering about two years ago over the very same model and possibly the same model year.
