Awning Light is too Bright

Hello, I have a 2017 Jayco 34rsbs. The awning light is very bright! Is there anyway to dim it down?

The general consensus is that there isn't a way to dim the factory light. Some people have simply replaced the factory LED strip with one from Amazon or ebay and bought a replacement that has a built in dimmer.

I simply bought some LED accent lights and installed them under the camper, towards the ground. They provide sufficient light to see to walk around at night and don't disturb anyone else. I also have a cheap string of Christmas white LED lights that I hang from my awning if I want some softer lighting to play cards or read a book.

Remote dimmer switch from Amazon place in between LED strip and two wires from trailer. The one I got fit perfectly into the channel that LED is in.

I dimmed mine with an in-line dimmer for LED lights, 12V.

IF you are going to try and use an LED dimmer, you need to make sure your awning lights are on their own ground. LED's dim via pulse modulation and will not work with a shared ground.

I replacer my white strip with a set of color changing (to keep DW happy) but dimmable. Love being able to run the lights at half brightness instead of lighting up my site like a stadium...

I grabbed some of this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Ran it right along the LED strip. 2 layers of it. Now I have a nice yellow bug light that is not nearly as offensive as the bright white stock LED.

I used one of these.
I would loose the remote for sure if I had installed the remote type.

We had our Jayco dealer install dimmers on our awning lights. They make a big difference.

Any photos or instructions on how you wired it to your LED lights. It seems there bisn't enough room there where the awning closes and the leds start.

Somewhere near the light switch I would think.

I may have to try this.

You have to be careful installing a dimmer near the switch. On many trailers, the switch that controls the awning light is on a common ground. As mentioned previously, an LED dimmer works on Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) and must be connected to the same hot and ground as the light itself.

LOTS of good ideas in this thread:

I installed mine just like "Filthy-Beast", but my install is not quite as clean. Works well though.

Thanks Bob
forgot about the PWM caveat. In the awning track looks like the way to go.

You're welcome! Let us know how your install goes!

My favorite part is that I can now separate the step light from the awning light. So, when all I need is a little light, that's what I get. If I want stadium lighting, I can have that too!

Nice find. Where did you mount the controller?

Against the back wall of the basement.
I'm outside when I want to adjust it, so outside seemed like a logical spot.
I have the optional awning but didn't put a dimmer on that one. It usually stays off

Great idea. I will have to take a close look and see where the wiring is on my main awning.

Awning dimmer

I installed one of these dimmers
https://www.amazon.com/SMAKN-Adjusta...ble+dimmer+led
Dealer and Jayco said it couldn't be done.
Turns out it was on of the easiest mods I have ever done and works amazing.
Now the awning light is actually useable without landing an airplane.

I like the idea of a dimmer, I'll have to look into that. For now, when I want to dim the awning led's I simply roll the awning in just enough to where the lights are just about to be covered by the take up of the awning material, the lights will shine against the top of the awning and reflect back out significantly reducing the brightness.
