Electric awning recall

@rvtravel: Big recall of RV awnings. Feds say "Don't use your RV until it's fixed." http://bit.ly/18u3Nd7

Yikes, this is a big issue, potentially affecting up to 27,000 RVs with Dometic powered awnings. The recommendation is to NOT drive your RV until you know whether you have one of the suspect awnings. I'm guessing I'll be looking how to zip-tie the awning on our trailer closed for our planned trip next week. Drat.

I just got the awning model # and serial #, (located inside the front support rail, you need to extend the awning and get a short ladder) and called the Dometic 800 recall # (888.447.0003). Got right through, and the customer service rep first set up my account, which needed the VIN for the trailer. Next she took the model # and serial #, ran a check and determined that our awning was in fact one impacted by the recall. She said they would phone me tomorrow with a list of authorized repair persons in our area, and have me select one of them to come to our location to make the fix. Hopefully, we can get this done before our planned outing on May 17.

Am kinda glad now that I have a Carefree of Colorado awning. Good luck and ultra-quick service to those who have recalled Dometic awnings.

Looks like it's the Weather Pro models...the ones that tuck on their own after sensing high wind or heavy rain.

http://www.rvbusiness.com/2013/05/nh...list-in-april/

Certain other powered awnings also affected.

According to the letter Jayco sent the NHSTA on 4/30/13 the affected trailers are the ones with a Dometic model 9100 power awning installed.

Mike, Just curious... when did you take delivery on your trailer. Ours was built in march. took delivery end of March. I'm hoping ours is not included but thats probably not going to be the case. I can't call to find out until later next week when I will be at the TT again.

Jdorant, I picked the trailer up in Middlbury, IN at Indiana RV Connection on April 3. The build sheet that came with all the paperwork shows the trailer was built Feb. 28. The date on the awning sticker showed Feb. 15, two days after the "problems" started. I did NOT hear from Dometic today regarding repair; and will hope to hear from them tomorrow. Should we not, I'm working on a way to secure the awning to the trailer so we can still make our planned outing next Friday, May 17. One fix may be to drill a hole through the front awning frame and use a bolt to secure it; the other may be to run a cable/rope from the rear top to the front top of the awning. I'm not going to let this setback discourage us from our first outing!

The bulletin says the recall affects RVs built between Feb. 13, 2013 and April 9, 2013, btw.

Well, it sounds like our trailer was built about 1 week after yours and it is a whitehawk so i'm gonna take a gamble and guess ours is also a recalled awning. I did speak with my dealer and they don't know all the details yet but they don't seem to concerned. I also will not let this impact our planned trips but dont think I will do anything to secure it, but sure will be keeping a good eye on my side view mirrors. LOL Maybe there will be a chance (doubtful) they can fix before our next outing.

The pdf file is too large to post, but here is a link to the notification letter Jayco sent to the NHTSA giving all the details of the recall at: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs...3V168-9215.pdf. The sticker on my TT indicates it was manufactured 4/13 so I think it might be one of the affected ones.

Call Dometic and they will tell you if your awning is in the recall and if so will setup service to fix.

Well the camper/awning Gods must be smiling on us. We have been trouble free since June last summer and our awning is not included in this recall. That is truely a milestone for our trailer.
