Propane Regulator Recall - thread #2

I just received a Recall Notice for the propane tank regulator (Winntec Model 6020) on model years from 2017 - 2021 which includes a lot of models and units.
The issue is that the regulator second stage can fail, resulting in too much pressure and gas flow to appliances. Probably the biggest concern is the refrigerator when operating on propane because the chimney for the heater is close to the wood side of a cabinet. There was a post a not too long ago about someone finding the cabinet was extremely hot: which could be a result of too much gas pressure from the regulator increasing the flame size.

Has anyone experienced this?

I wonder how long it will take to get units in to dealers for the recall work, assuming there are adequate supplies of replacement regulators.

Won't be happening soon, that's for sure. Dealers are backed up. Parts are hard to come by. That's a lot of new regulators needed!

Mine should on the list as well.

They don't insulate the fridge compartment. So you will feel heat/cold from the outside as well as the heat from the fridge. I'm insulating mine currently. Also making some corrections to meet Norcold instillation specs.

The recalled regulators will have a manufacture date stamped on the left side. If it is N 17 XX, N 18 XX or N 19 XX, with XX being the week number, it is recalled. Mine is N 19 42. I've called my dealer and it looks doubtful I can get it in before we leave on Labor Day for a month in Colorado. I looked for a replacement on line but most are out of stock so must be a shortage. I was going to replace it myself but that would not satisfy the recall.

Earl,
They don't do a very good job at anything in the fridge compartment. On slide units, the ventilation is the biggest issue. I have done a lot of work to improve the air flow and increase the ventilation out the top vent. I insulated the sidewall on mine, which happens to be close the burner chimney, and it was warming the interior of the adjacent cabinet .
I think until the recall work can be performed, we all need to keep a close eye on the flame in any appliance where we can actually view it. I keep a nose and ear to the refrigerator when it is on propane.

Pic of my fridge compartment. The cupboard above the compartment came apart and allowed heat from the fridge and flue as well as dust into the cupboard. It also was uninsulated.

We also got our recall letter today. I guess I will start trying to find a place that is “authorized” to do the work.

Note the statement that you should be reimbursed, if you already had it swapped out.

That's good to hear......, I swapped my regulator (N 17 15) out a few weeks ago saving the regulator & pigtails. Waiting for my recall notice.

My fridge was keeping the counter warm and the heat going there slowed the air flow out the vents. Insulated and sealed above the baffle has cut the high temp on the counter top and side of the counter. I added insulation intended for under hood use to the walls near the burner and along the sides. Last, added a pair of fans for times when outside temps hit above 80 and the whole system would not cool enough to keep food cold. Combination works perfectly even in the 90+ temps we have had locally. Before it failed while traveling much above 80s.

Received the notice yesterday.
What a pain it will be to have the dealer do it.
Would have to take 2 days of of work...1 to drop it off and one to pick it up.
Would be easier to buy a new one.

Just checked ours and it's a 16 32. With everything we've had to have fixed on this rv I can't believe we lucked out on this.

regulator

I got my letter 8/10/21, I change mine last month because it was leaking gas at the vent. Jayco told me they want a picture or the old regulator. They also want me to carry it to be checked my the dealer. I got a picture off the internet. They want a picture they will have one. Who would save an old regulator or take a picture? Thank God it didn't catch fire. Good luck, there will be a back log of repairs. If I am out $72 for a regulator I be dam if I will take it back for them to look at.

Jayco told me they had plenty in stock but my dealer doesn't agree and could be months before they have them. What regulator are you guys replacing yours with if not using Jaycos? Looks fairly simple to replace yourself?

Can anyone provide a part number so that I can replace this myself and eliminate dealing with another inept service department and take 2 days off work

regulator

Mine went bad before I found out about the recall. Started leaking in June, but didn't get around to check it till July. I bought a Mr. Heater from Camping World. Looks just like the Wintech. Maybe the same manufacture. I changed it out used Teflon tape thread sealant rated for propane (yellow). Checked for leaks. Everything looks good.

I also received the notice. Called the dealer and they wanted my VIN and a picture of the regulator. Not all are bad. Mine was ok. You can also check online at the site listed in the notice by submitting your VIN.

In February temp got to -14 (yes, in Texas) and BOTH freshly filled propane tanks vented to empty in less than 12 hours. The electric warmer in the Norcold also failed. I replaced the propane and tanks, and regulator immediately started venting. (Hey, it's cold at 0 degrees f) and I was able to obtain a Mr. Heater regulator at the local Ace Hardware for under $22. Replaced it myself. It was so cold outside, the fridge never warmed. Not worried about the recall, probably the lowest cost claim they will ever see, if I even file a claim. Oh, my dealer, 110 miles away said they would call IF they got a replacement in, otherwise I could pay to replace with a replacement "not provided by Jayco" and submit a claim for reimbursement. Not an option, driving 220+ unreimbursed miles round trip, then maybe being denied claim for recall repair at an authorized dealer who charges us peons $125/hr.
