Aluminum wall corroding

the exterior wall on my 2011 camper slide out has corroding spots all over it. you can actually poke your fingers right through it. jayco said they will not fix it because it is out of warranty. has any one every tried to replace the side panel before? is it hard to do?

You may have water that has infiltrated the insulation which is causing a reaction inside the wall. Usually the wall panels are installed from the bottom up so you have to start at the top to remove panels It could turn into a major project.

Welcome to JOF

Any chance that you could post a couple of pics, a 2011 model shouldn't be incurring this type of issue being a relatively new.

As 'Grumpy' mentioned, possibly a moisture issue...., I would check the slide windows for leaks/caulking, and also the slide roof focusing on the sealer taped that runs alone the outer edge of the slide roof covering the trim edge and screws.

I recall that there was an issue a year or two back with the slide roof sealer tape lifting up, possibly exposing a way for moisture to enter the slide wall structure.

Let us know what you find.

Bob

This happened to my old trailer. Water leak in the roof led to wood rot and metal screws rusting. Either the wet wood or the dissimilar metal caused corrosion and holes in my aluminum. The benefit of aluminum is that it can be replaced.

Thanks for posting the pics!

..... I wonder if it could have been an issue with surface contamination prior to the surface being coated/painted?

Is the aluminum flat where the corrosion is present, or does the surface of that aluminum show swelling?

Jayco said it is from moisture. I just can't believe the will not fix it being so new.this was my first jayco and I guess my last. I will go back to keystone. I'm all ready started looking for a new camper, but would like to fix it first seance the rest of the camper looks like new. I check the roof every spring but I will look again. We do use our camper when it is cold and the window sweat really bad.

seriously???

it isn't in warranty anymore. Doesn't matter if it is Keystone ,Jayco ,GM ,Dodge, GE, JVC...etc.....I am sure you were offered extended coverage when you signed the papers

"Checking" the roof is not enough. You need to have the unit leak tested. Sealtech system. The unit is pressurized and then sprayed with a soap solution. It will detect the smallest of leaks.

With cold weather use especially with an aluminum skin you will get condensation in the walls since there is no vapor barrier between the paneling and insulation.

Did Keystone make a change? My 2005 Montana only had one year.

The corrosion looks to me, to be either galvanic corrosion, or maybe salt water exposure. The galvanic type could be dissimilar metals, or stray electrical currents.

I wonder how many of us actually have this done? I know I haven't, I don't even know if my local RV service offers this. How often is it recommended?

Sorry if I got off topic.....

I believe the Jayco owners manual recommends an inspection twice a year (minimum), don't recall the exact wording.

What I've done in years past to repair...not real repair but to stop more damage from leaks...take hair dryer to make all dried up and warm. Use marine white sealant on holes. Beside that you can only replace siding and that is a expensive job.

I was going to ask the OP if they get a "poke" from the exterior of the rv on ocassion? We have a few holes as pictured and have had issues with "hot skin" in the past...
