Anyone recertifying their propane tanks

My trailer tanks are still pretty new, but I just checked the manufacturer dates on a couple of tanks I use for the grills. They are way past their recertification dates. No one even pays attention when I get them refilled. Has anyone had a problem refilling an old tank?

Yep. Wouldnt refill my old tank. Had to buy a new one. In fairness the old tank was 20 + Years old and was rusted pretty bad. Had I sanded and painted it I probably would still be filling it up.

Exchange them for Blue Rhinos. They will recertify and use them again.

If I turn in my old LP tanks as an exchange tank with Blue Rino or similar, can I then start having that tank refilled or am I committed to exchange for ever.

Depends on the tanks age...if it's still good age wise, then yes it can be refilled.

The tank you receive from Blue Rino is yours to do with as you please. They fill their tanks up only 3/4 of the way and charge you a lot. I guess that makes up for the people that stick them with old tanks.

All tanks have expiration dates on them. The Blue Rhinos as well. When turning in your old tanks for Blue Rhinos, Look at the dates stamped on them. Get the one with the ones with the closest date to the date you are looking at them.
All propane cylinders require recertification 12 years from the date it was manufactured, and every 5 years after that.

So what do you do when it’s time to recertify your tank? Just follow the quick and easy steps below, and you’ll be grilling (safely) in no time!

  • Visit www.amerigas.com and enter your zip code to find the nearest AmeriGas location.
  • Contact your local office to schedule your recertification appointment.
  • Bring your tank into your local office for recertification. You’ll receive a sticker on your tank with the inspection date and recertification date.

I have never used the exchange tanks, I don't believe I ever will, way overpriced, there are plenty of places to get my tanks filled who will only charge me by the actual quantity added.

It is more costly whe exchanging but not much, it's about $14 here. I don't exchange every time only when the date is close to expiring.
The one take I will get certified is the larger one, I can't remember the size but a new one is about $120.

I had to have an old 100# tank certified, it was free at the local propane place. They put a gauge on it, filled it with air and it sat for a few days, it held pressure fine so they stamped a new date on it.

One of our tanks was past the date where it could be refilled. The gas station where we usually fill our tanks simply exchanged our old tank for a new one.

For me this has nothing to do with cost, I have 2 20# bottles I use for various things around my house; BBQ, Heater, fire pit, plus one of them occasionally goes camping to run a lantern or two as well as BBQ.

Anyway both bottles are ~20 yrs old, and have been recertified once, but if I can simply swap them out for new tanks and the only premium is paying a few extra $ for LP on a single occasional; I would prefer that over buying bottles or re-cert for a second time.

I've seen new tanks that are stamped saying they must be recertified in 10 years and some that say 12 years. In Las Vegas, the U-Haul stores say that they can only refill them up to 10 years old no matter what they say on them. Mine are only a year old, so it wasn't like they were trying to get a sale of some that day.

The tanks are yours to do with as you choose, I have exchanged old tanks in the past for newer ones and then when they were empty again had them refilled at a filling station where youg get more propane for less money. In fact a place here now fills 20 llb tanks for 5 bucks on Thursdays, lol

Depends on where you live. At our house we were only 5mi from the propane company so I would have my tanks filled there. If the tank was out of date they would check it and stamp it for free.

I recently ran into this at a tractor supply. I was getting a tank refilled for my grill at home. I think it was a newly certified employee who was doing everything like she was trained. she caught the out of date. I was dumbfounded. Had never heard of a date issue on these tanks. I plan to just go to WM and exchange it for a good one. Now I know where the date is stamped and know its 12 years.

Live and learn

Last year I bought 2 new tanks at Costco fairly inexpensive and came prepurged. Infact the Costco tank was cheaper than getting one of those blue exchange tanks..

Only had to use the propane tank exchange for the BBQ at home and I go the neighborhood ACE Hardware store since it's close. When the TT tanks come due that's where I'll exchange them. Definitely check the date on the new tank when doing the exchange.
