Bad Battery or Overcharging

2007 Jayco JayFlight RKS 27.5

Last season battery starting boiling and gassing, when hooked up to shore power. I do check the water levels yearly and don't remember it ever being low. I sure it's toast now.

Wondering how to check / test if the converter / charger is working right, before I wreck a new battery.

I do not know if I have a Multi-Stage charger. Can I find out by the Make Model of my trailer? (Trailer has 2 ft of snow around it right now)

Thanks

voltmeter is your friend...

when you plug it in with your new battery or a known good one check the voltage it should be around 13.5v.. if you put on a drained battery it should go to 15.5v or so if it is a three stage... IIRC the middle is like 14.4v...

I had a similar problem about 10 years ago with a brand new battery. My voltmeter showed all was OK, but the battery was boiling.

When I took the battery back to the selling dealer he checked the SpG and it was OK, so he said my charging system was bad. He wouldn't believe my test data, and refused to warranty the battery. I told him where to stick his battery and left without it. I realixe i gave up a core charge, but I felt better having the dealer carry the #$%^ thing back to his scrap bin.

The new battery bought elsewhere is till functioning to this day.

Bottom line....yes batteries can be faulty too.
