Battery wiring

The last owner of my TT hacked the wiring up at the battery. I think I can save it. Not at my camper at this moment but would like to get the materials before I go home. If I remember correctly, it looks like 8 gauge wire. My question is, should I stay with the 8 gauge or reduce it to 10? For 30 amp service I think the minimal is 10 gauge. Should I stay with the higher rated 8 gauge? Will this affect anything adversely? TIA!

Note: I will be converting over to (2) 6V's this fall if that matters.
