Blade Fuses

Yesterday, after reading a post here, about some random blown fuses and then reading somewhere, someone mentioning the ultra-cheapie blade fuses could possibly not work as they're intended, got me to wondering:

I bought a cheapie box of fuses months ago. Will they do the job right when I need them and are they safe?

Then, I stared to consider the placement location of my converter/fuse/breaker box. It's that location where the slide doesn't block it altogether, but it sure does keep you from being able to look at it 'head on.'

I decided to take a couple photos of the box and the sticker that tells exactly which fuse/breakers goes to what component and keep it with the fuses. I figure, with a photo and a map, I'll be able to feel my way to changing a fuse, even if I can't SEE it.

When I was looking at all my fuses, I noticed my single, 30amp slide fuse and knew THAT, of all fuses, is the one I need to ensure I have a quality, proper back-up fuse in waiting...and WHY is is BLACK? Isn't it supposed to be dark green?

I looked online for fuses and found Bussman fuses. I remember changing the old screw in fuses in the fuse box at home, when I was a kid and I remember the Bussman brand. Then I noticed they have fuses that illuminate when blown. How convenient is that?!

Then I thought, why risk the trailer I spent $$$$ buying, using cheapie fuses? I figured, buy something made in USA or at least a worthy reputable company that manufactures quality fuses.

I bought myself a single 30amp illuminator and a 10 pack of 15 amp illuminating. I'll replace all the fuses in my box with them, that way at least I have the convenience of a fuse 'telling me' it is blown without having to guess, especially with the slide 30 amp fuse and the inconvenient hardship of actually having to check it, if the slide happens to be in the closed position.

I'll keep the original fuses as backup and still have that $8 box of 'questionable blade fuses' as emergency back-up.

Most of the power stations will show a red light when a fuse is blown if I recall correctly

I think your concern was possibly not necessary, but you bought the best fuses in the world. Bussmann is based in St. Louis County, Mo. I’ve been there many times for classes.
What is the reason fuses are installed, one might ask. The sole purpose of fuses and circuit breakers is for protection of the plastic insulation on the conductors. These overcurrent protective devices limit the current from getting too high, causing excessive heat that exceeds the temperature that causes deteriorating the plastic insulation.
Colby is correct, the panel has led lights to show blown fuse.

My panel is not as easy to see IF it happens the slide fuse is the one blown. Unless I put my camera in there to take a photo, it's pretty tough to see from the side angel I'd be forced to be at.

As far as the remainer, yeah...I tend to do that...overthink and over prepare.

But I did know I looked at the multipack of fuses I bought for $8, felt them and thought...'no way these are gonna be 100% safe.'

Thanks for your replies. Sincerely, Judy Overthinker.

Get one of these, you just put the pins in the two slots on top of the fuse.

Thanks Grumpy. I have a simple plastic puller, but I see this has a tester. Nice. Thank you. My husband thanks you for one more thing I might have to get, because- "I need it for the camper."

From the factory, my slide came with an auto resetting fuse.

I have a large Tic Tac container that I store all my spare fuses in.

Does your special fuse look different? I noticed my slide fuse is BLACK..a 30 amp fuse...but black. 30 amp fuses are supposed to be green?

I don't have any of those, but it must be a resetting style similar to the two threaded stud kind that are under many trailers. If they trip, they'll cool down after several minutes and reset.
