Fold down steps self deply

I've had this happen a few times, usually when a strong cross wind gives them a shove. Best preventive measure we've come up with is to put a bungee (good ol' bungees) across them when traveling. Not the best fix. using a couple of the existing holes, a bungee stretched across will hold them fine, but if you unhook just one side the bungee gets bound up in the steps once they're down. Besides, it looks kind of sad. Has anyone else come up with a better remedy? I'm very hesitant to drill anywhere on them and risk weakening them.
The steps on my Eagle 5er are the 3 step model.

I have found that a bungee cord is the safest, fastest and cheapest way to secure the steps and since they come in different colors you can coordinate them to the different holidays.

I won't suggest that to my wife.
I was trying to come up with a pin release kind of catch but so far no brainstorm. It just needs a little resistance.

I also use a bungee cuz I just about wiped someone out while exiting into a rest area in New Mexico a couple years ago. The bungee fits in holes torward the upper back of the steps. I release the one side, pull the steps down, and it seems to stay in the hole on the other side. Looks tacky? I never thought of that but I guess it does at that.

Could you add a eye bolt to one of the holes and still get enough clearance to open the steps?
It might clear and allow the bungee to be permanently attached on one end.

I have never had that happen but it would be kinda scary.
