Fuel shut off valve
I like to run the gas out of my small engine devices when I'm through using them. Letting the engine run until the carb is dry helps prevent carburetor problems if the engine is not run for a while.
To this end, I installed a shut off valve on my Onan generator onboard my Greyhawk.
It was very easy to do; I've included a picture as to how it looks installed. For this job I bought the valve and 2 hose clamps. I cut the fuel line close to the carburetor and installed the valve inline.
Now I can run the carburetor dry after each use and not have to worry about carburetor problems from lack of use.
The valve is available from many sources. Auto parts stores have therm; I bought mine from Amazon cause I’m lazy.

Always a good idea for the gasoline-fueled engines.
We had one in our first RV and had to replace the carburetor twice in 10 years at $220 each time since there was no rebuild option.

Gas engine, yes.
Diesel engine, no. Diesel fuel is more oil than alcohol. It won’t gum up like gas. And getting one restarted after running it dry could be a real pain.

Further to this thread, I wonder if a fuel injected engine would need a shut off valve? There is presumably no bowl holding gasoline to gum up and clog jets.
I've seen more small engines with fuel injection.
What say You?

I stick with non-ethanol gas in my 2 and 4 cycle engines. Also add fuel treatments. No problems since I started doing this.

This.
If you use Regular pump gas containing ethanol in ANY small engine, 2 stroke or 4 stroke, you will have problems. The solution is 100% gasoline.

even with pure gas you can still run into trouble... as the fuel evaporates off it leaves behind solids that plug up the ports.. it is a best practice to run the carb dry or to drain it.. most carburetors have a drain on the bottom of the bowl, most not all, and that helps to keep the solids out by draining it.
fuel injectors do not require this but they do need regular exercise they don't like to sit for over 12 months don't ask me how I know ;o(((

Carb gasoline engines I always run dry after use. I also put Stabil in the tank if they are not to be run at least once a week. If you have one with an issue sometimes Seafoam will fix it. These two can be difficult if you are running off the MH fuel tank, although I don't think Stabil will harm the MH engine.
FI engines typically do not like to be run dry. But, evaporation is not as much of a problem. Check the mfg recommendations on use.
I like running a generator at least once a month. Start, warm up a little, put a load on it for a couple of minutes, take the load off and run dry (if gas).
