Gray Water Odor.

We were boondocking and I was trying to avoid hooking up and making a long trip to dump. We were filling the gray but had plenty of space in the black. I decided to move a few gallons from the gray to the black.

I placed a 5 gallon bucket under the pipe and released three gallons of the most sour smelling gray water imaginable. Gag worthy, I first thought I pulled the wrong valve. I was surprised. I also realized I had a learning opportunity in front of me.

I added a scoop of Happy Camper to a little water in my kitchen sink and drained it. I came back the next afternoon and drained three more gallons. No odor. The water even seemed a bit soapier.

I'm not certain that having clean smelling gray water is important at all but at least I know Happy Camper does something and isn't just some ground up chalks from a long forgotten blackboard.

Does anyone regularly treat their gray tank and are there benefits beyond odor control?

Good to hear that Happy Camper worked. We occasionally get a little stink from the gray tank when I dump it. But it’s been negligible since I reminded DW that you can’t wash food scraps down the drain like at home. We are pretty careful now and it is pretty bearable.

Yep. That's good stuff. I use it to help clean the gray every now and again.

Am I the only person that believes RV manufacturers should have an easier way to access the gray, black and fresh tanks? There should be an easy way to examine and clean all your tanks in my opinion. No guesswork. Maybe access panels designed into the rig.

Totally agree!! My bathroom tank valve which is on a mile long cable, is not opening all the way. I will have to crawl on my belly through a maze of wiring to get to it. All three of my tanks are on long cables: Black tank 60", grey tank one 72", grey tank two 105". Talked to my favorite dealer and he's seen cables as long as 120". Insane

So they put in some access to clean or inspect tanks and add something else to leak. Not sure that is a good idea.
