Making Lemonade - Part 4 of 5 The truck again
As I hinted in part 3 after a couple weeks of worry free driving I was once again dead on the side of the road. After a few minutes it restarted and we called AAA to see if they had a recommendation for a repair shop, they didn't have a AAA shop but offered a name and address. Dependable Auto in Leadville. We drove over.
He was swamped with work but grabbed his computer and plugged it in. "Well it looks like fuel injectors and possibly the fuel pump. What kind of gas have you been using?"
"Ahh . . . well . . ."
"Cheapest sh*t you can find?" It was more an accusation than an answer and accurate. Yesterday I looked up to see a station about ten cents cheaper than anywhere else in town and filled up. I wondered why it wasn't busy.
"yeah"
"Well that really low octane can cause you problems at this elevation, try running some name brand premium grade fuel through it."
"Great, anything else we can do?"
"We can put some 44K in the gas, cost you $20." I agreed and he went into the back to grab a can and even opened the can and poured it into the tank. I assume he felt anyone inept enough to put crappy ass gas into the tank couldn't be trusted to empty the can correctly. I don't blame him.
We drove past the sight of our previous stall and almost reached Twin Lakes when it died again. Another five minute wait and it restarted and we returned. I decided that the next day DW would stay in camp where we had some cell service with T-Mobile and I would drive towards Buena Vista. Just past BV was a Ford Dealer in Salida. If I needed help I was hoping to get there.
It drove like it was new. It seemed to enjoy the $3 per gallon premium grade gas. Our problems were almost over. We still had the problem of no AC which would make any stays on the way home uncomfortable. I decided then and there to not put no name gas in my tank, especially on vacation.
