Method for Re-Sealing a Tube of Sealant?

So, I want to buy some Dicor lap sealant to fix a small area. I only need a small amount right now.

How do I re-seal the tube so I can use more of it next Spring?


I've tried a few different methods to seal caulking tubes in the past, but everything I've tried has not been entirely successful.

I use a large screw 3” when I need to seal something I PULL the screw out…this has always worked for me.

Besides the screw I wrap the nozzle end with electric tape too.

I have not tried this on dicor. I use a very large wire nut. Twist on tight.

I have tried this with OSI Quad, and it did not work.

I use the food vacuum sealer and seal it up in the bag. I have tried screws in the applicator, tape, and just about everything you can imagine. The vacuum sealer works the best of anything. I just opened a year old used tube of Dicor for a fan install on the roof and the stuff was as fresh as new.

Be sure to put a plug in the applicator opening. While I have not had it happen, I did fear that the vacuum would suck the stuff out of the tube. Just a precaution.

I take a 3" piece of duct tape and fold it equally over the opening. I then make sure that its sealed tightly to the tube nozzle and all seams are tightly closed.
Works for me.

I try to use the majority of the tube in one application, After I am done - I carefully place the paper towels I use to clean up any mess made around the tube opening and place the tube into it's future storage location - the trash can.

We seal up all sorts of cartridges with dowels or screws and then use small balloons over the tip with a rubber band wrap. Won't last forever, but should give you quite a few months on a shelf in temperatures below 80. The balloons are less apt to 'breathe' is what I was told way back when and seems to be true. Or, find yourself a good contractor or roof supply house and they usually have packs of tube end condoms that do pretty much the same thing. I have always used screws in the past but then I found these caps. They work great. I have had multiple types of sealant not dry out on me. I think I picked them up at Lowe’s.

Stuff a dab of plumbers putty about a 1/4" into the nozzle and then around the tip........it will squeeze out with the next use and lasts a very long time with no dying out.
