Question Pump Not Pulling Antifreeze

I drained fresh water tank of the few gallons that were in it, although we didn't use it. I may have been checking pump earlier this summer. Put valves in WH bypass positions.

We only use the pump for winterizing so I don't remember what it sounds like when working properly. But with faucets closed there's a low hum as soon as it's turned on. Sounds like the impellar turning slowly. No difference when a faucet is opened. Seems it was louder when a faucet was opened. Can't recall if it was silent with faucets closed.

The suction hose has little or no draw when I put my finger over the end. I doubt it would suck up cigarette smoke. Zero antifreeze being drawn into tube. the opposite end of the hose goes into a line with a valve in it. That is open, although closing it made no difference. That line goes into a T and on into the pump. The line coming off the long end of the T also has a valve. Moving it makes no difference.

Any ideas othe than the pump is shot?

It's in warranty but I need to winterize before I can get it into a dealer. Don't like to rely on blowing it out but will probably have to. Thanks.

Is the valve from the water tank to the pump closed?

I had a very similar problem a while back with a Shur-flo pump. Checked with the manufacturer (out of warranty), and they said it was a worn-out rubber valve assembly inside the pump. Told me what part number was needed, and I found one on ebay ( I think it cost about $15 or so). Very simple to replace - about 20 minutes or so with included instructions - and it completely solved the problem.

I had something similar happen a number of years ago and I don't know the cause. However, I got it to pump by inserting a funnel in the in the antifreeze hose, holding it straight up in the air and (slowly so you don't create an air bubble) pour in the antifreeze until the hose is filled. Then I removed the funnel and inserted the filled hose into the antifreeze jug. When I started the pump... it pumped.

Lizzie, if priming it as FPM suggests and a similar idea of putting water in the fresh water don't work I'll look at what your problem was to see if it's mine too. Thanks.

One thing I can tell you is that the pump runs stronger and has better suction when you're plugged into shore power. My pump runs much slower and seems to labor when running on the battery alone.

That was the answer. Thanks to everybody.

That's one of the first things I noticed about this forum, fellow campers helping out other fellow campers!

Right. We got our first trailer in '09 and had never camped before, plus I have no handyman ability. So I've found this and a couple other forums invaluable.

As far as "handyman ability" goes, I'm right there with ya! I know just enough to be dangerous!

Worst part of getting to my age is, when I do learn how to fix something, I'll probably never have to do it again!
