roof vent
The roof vent on my '87 pup 1006 popped up while driving on the hiway. I found the small box that the gear is in was missing some rivets on one side and the sidecover was hanging loose. It seems the ratchet is stripped and the vent lid can be raised and lowered with or without turning the crank. Is the gear replaceable or do I need to find a whole new vent? Where is the best (meaning cheapest) place to find either?

Suggest visiting a few RV Parts stores in your region. They often show books and books of special order items - like vent crank parts. Once you get the part number and their selling price, you can decide to buy. Or, visit the next RV parts store - for better pricing. And/or surf the net - for online parts stores.
Hope this helps.

Yes you can just buy the crank. Need to know the model though. Ventline is what is commonly found on our units. Ebay has them or as previously mentioned the local RV parts dept. Take it out and with you for ease of matching.

I did some surfing and found a few options. Thursday, I will probably remove the crank unit and see if I can match it up to what I can find at a store or dealer.

1987 RV.. I would just replace the whole thing. The vent cover is old and you will be replacing more on it as time goes by. They are not that expensive.

That is something to consider. I don't really want to spend much money on it now since it will be for sale in the spring. It served us well this summer, but it was a just a trial run to see if we liked the idea of owning something for use at a campground. It was used often, but it ended up not being used as it was intended.

I went to the nearest RV dealer and found a new gear assembly for less than $12. It was easy to replace in just a few minutes, which is about how long it took to sell the camper.

I like having a MaxxAir cover over my vents. After reading lots of glowing reviews on them I installed one on the bath vent on the now gone X23B. The vent was always open, no rain ever got in. We recently upgraded to a 5th and I just installed one on the bath vent. I don't see a reason that a PUP wouldn't benefit from one as well. It offers a little protection to your vent also.

I agree with RedHorse1. I had to replace the covers on my 2008 TT last year as they were so rotten I couldn't hold them together with duck tape. I was also always cleaning pine needles and dead flies off the screen.
I just picked up a FW and had vent covers put on so now I can leave the vents open, no worries.

We bought the truck almost a year ago and got the 5th early this year. It's been a bit of a strain but we've been angling in this direction for several years. ....trying to act like I've got something planned..

RedHorse1 and I are in the same boat. Last year we bought an 2013 F350. This Spring saw a great deal on the the 2013 Jayco FW so we bought it. Now my wife wanted a new vehicle so git an 2014 F150. Feeling real poor....
