Semi Truck Clipped RV Rear Corner

Traveling from Nashville, TN to Mt. Rushmore we stopped at a truck stop for a quick bite to eat. Came out and found a trucker hit our RV. It was a hit and run and we will be stuck dealing with the repair through our insurance. The damage was mostly the ripped off trim but in a couple spots about an inch of the exterior wall broke away too. It looks like it might not be a terrible repair job except I'm not sure how the missing bits of wall edge get fixed. What do you all think? Simple or more involved than it seems? Since we are more than 1,000 miles away from home we can't do much about this right now. I did have a big roll of putty and used that to create a temporary water barrier until we get home. We had a huge rain storm right afterward with no water intrusion so I think we're okay for the moment. The damage did not get through the metal behind the outer wall and from inside there is no evidence that anything even happened. Anyway... curious if anyone has any firsthand knowledge as to what I can expect in trying to get this repaired.Click image for larger version

I hope police report was made to document the time and location for any future insurance claims. Also, most truck stops are loaded with cameras, maybe some way to see the slime bag that did this?

Man, sorry to hear that happened! It's a shame some don't take responsibility for their actions. It makes me think one of us will be staying and watching with ours when we travel this summer. Good luck with the insurance, and repairs. Let us know how it pans out.

Very sorry this happened. As Norty posted, the truck stops have numerous cameras and hopefully the LEO asked for the tapes. Hope the rest of your trip goes well!

Not trying to brush this off as nothing but it appears to me to be such a minor brushing on the truckers part that he may have been oblivious to it. Yes he should have been aware but they have blind spots and he may have simply missed it.

Years ago my daughter was on multi-lane interstate (Atlanta) when the car on her left didn't see her and came over, physically pushing her up against the rear tires of a tractor-trailer rig on her right; she was sandwiched on both sides. The truck driver said he never even felt it.

Could have been much worse. The trucker might not have seen it.

Good luck, keep us up to date on how the repairs are done.

What a bummer! I've fueled-up 8 or 9 times since picking-up our rig last month and am amazed (if not somewhat alarmed) by the traffic/activity at truck stops. My attitude now is get in, use the trucker lanes and get out. These places, especially out front around the RV lanes, seem like an accident waiting to happen. Plus, for the near-term, I'm not towing anything so my rear is completely exposed.

Pitifully, no cameras. We spoke with an employee and due to construction and the somewhat make shift parking area they had setup they have nothing viewing that area. Insurance has already told me it will be covered. Have to pay the deductible of course but at least it wasn't worse. Puts a damper on our trip but I'm trying not to let it bug me too much.

Once many years ago, I dropped my fifth wheel in the bed on the first night of a month long trip. Completely my fault.

We finished the trip, had a great time even though every time I looked in the rear view mirror, I got a queasy feeling in my stomach.

Enjoy the trip and let the insurance fix it when you are home.

That's why we have it!
