If you haven't done anything with the suspension and have 20K miles, you did fairly well. The bushings are usually the first wear point, I replace mine every year or 5K miles. Surely, the wet bolt upgrade and new bronze bushings will be a big help; I would also replace the shackle hanger straps with the heavier duty version. When you remove the old, you will likely see the holes are elongated. You can buy the whole thing as a kit, which will have the longer wet-bolts to allow for the thicker hangers. I have done this upgrade on several trailers over the years, and it was well worth it.

Was your trailer jacked up when you were testing the shackles? It was kind of hard to tell in the video. I thought I saw a jackstand but the wheels looked as if they were grounded.

Edit: nevermind, it would have to be off the ground.

Yes, the weight of the trailer is off the axles. The tires are just touching the ground.

Here's a picture of the stock stuff on the left with 3,000 miles, I replaced them with the one on the right, all of them--Harden Wet bolts with bronze bushings, and use Red Tacky Grease awesome stuff--and grease every year-- before season starts. Just a little difference between stock factory and after market I would say--

The Red and Tacky grease is also used for my axles, and I do not use the Easy lube axle fittings, and it works for me, have 18,000 on the unit with original bearings.

That's the way to do it!

Post back when you get it tore down and let us know if the spring eye got damaged.

So the weather was decent enough to work in my shop today (uninsulated), and I started to tear things down, even though I don't have the kit yet. I sprayed the bolts with penetrating spray 2x over the last 7 days.

I was able to remove the nuts without having to put a wrench on the bolt, which was really nice. Some slight tapping with the hammer and the bolts came out easily. At first glance the nylon bushings looked okay, but after further inspection and removing them from the holes, they're definitely worn out.

The shackles appear to be fine and so do the holes on the frame mounts. The eyes on the springs also look fine.

I will provide more updates as I go through the process.

What you are finding is typical. The bushings take the brunt of the wear, and that's good. The springs themselves rarely wear, it would be the bolts that suffer first after the bushings have worn through. Your shackle hangers look like the holes have not elongated much, which is also good. If you upgrade to the wet-bolts and bronze bushings you will get much better performance.

I'm waiting for the big brown truck to deliver the wet bolt kit [emoji846]

In the meantime, I'm sanding and painting everything black again.

Once installed, you will be able to rest easy and be confident in the suspension. All you'll need to do is grease it, and inspect the bushings annually. Good Job!

So I finished the install today.

It was easy to do. The bolts loosened up nicely and the new kit went in without issue.

Here are some pictures and a video showing the difference between the two sides.

I was telling my folks about the shackles on my trailer. My dad says, why don't you take a look at our fifth wheel and let me know if they need to be replaced.

I've ordered a set for them.

It's a 2014 Keystone Cougar.

Their last trip was 6000km to Florida and back. I'd say they almost didn't make it.Click image for larger version

This is a good example of "networking" and sharing experiences with other RV'ers. You really did them a huge favor, and probably saved them from a very catastrophic incident.
Good Job!

Any Trailer, TT or 5er should be coming from the factory with this type of suspension.
