Small hole in Rubber membrane

I have a small hole (about 2 inches) in the rubber roof membrane. (I think I lost a fight with a tree somewhere along the way.) Currently, it has some duct tape on it, but I plan on repairing it with Eternabond Leak Repair tape.

The question I have is this:
Should I put something underneath the membrane before I place the repair tape on the top? Sort of a backing?

Otherwise, I can see the leak repair tape attaching to the actual roof. I don't know if that would be a good thing, bad thing, or no difference thing.

What do you think?

Being you used duck tape clean the adhesive residual off really well.

Then just use a piece of eternabond tape. The key thing with eternabond, is not to stretch it. No backer is needed. If it's just a slit, just pull it together before taping.

I don't think you need a backing and I might even consider using some lap seal under the roof around the opening as backup. I would also lap seal the edge of the Eternabond tape.

I wouldn't bother with the backing, just cover it at least 2 inches on all sides. If you look at the roof membrane it is not thick and there is nothing under it.

The Eternabond tape is thicker than the membrane.
