Weak microwave?

Spent night one in camp driveway last night. We were watching a movie on the TV, and I put a bag of popcorn in the microwave on the popcorn setting. Didn't pop one kernel. I pull it out, the bag is somewhat warm. I put it in for 5 minutes and keep an eye on it. No popping, same warmish temp on the bag.

Is my brand new microwave faulty? Or is this a power issue? We were plugged into the garage outlet and watching TV, had the A/C running. Micro is 900 watts. Thought I would check here before yet again calling the dealer. As I type this, think I will try it again out there without any other power drains on, then try it inside to make sure it isn't the popcorn itself. It definitely seems to be a lack of heat in the rv micro.

Think I answered my own question. Took about a full minute longer than inside (prob due to lower wattage), but it did pop. Now I know not to use the microwave and tv/DVD at the same time. (tenters everywhere are groaning right now)

Guess I will go eat my 11am bag of popcorn now...

You state the air conditioner was running and the microwave. Two high current appliances. You need to know what the voltage in the camper is at the time. The microwave will suffer poor performance below 110V. The air conditioner could be damaged below 104V.

If you are plugged into a 15 or 20 amp outlet using an adapter and an extension cord you may well have been operating on low voltage.

You can purchase a plug in voltmeter for about $15 that have a scale of 100 to 130 volts. I have one that stays plugged in all the time.

Give it a more real test when you get into a cg w/30a service. If it is still slow notify the dealer.

The plug in volt meter is a great tool to alert you if the voltage is low.

I have a Dometic (actually on my second) and it is very powerful. Never have any issues with popcorn, baked potatoes, or boiling water. Even at lower voltages it is performed well.

I am surprised you did not pop a breaker. When running on 30 amps, I cannot run the microwave and the AC or I pop the main breaker in the trailer. It is not recommended to run the AC when not connected to 30 amp power source. If you do, do not run anything else and use a heavy gauge extension cord.

Never heard that one. We camped in 4 different rigs for 15 years with 30a. Never had a problem with the AC in combo with anything as long as you were careful.

Like norty1, we have run the A/C, microwave, CD player, 110V fan, and other items, all at the same time, on 30amps, and have never tripped the breaker. Guess different breakers behave differently.

Mine pop when using just the AC when plugged into home. I turned it on just to see if it would pop and sure enough it did. If you are running your AC plugged into 15 or 20 amp service at home, Beware, This is a Fire Hazard. All is good until you overload the circuit and you have a fire in your walls. I'm a FF, seen an overloaded circuit a few times. Fire spreads quickly, not worth it to me.

Huh. I've learned something new! Well in any case, we rarely would run the a/c while in camp driveway anyhow, not something I would do on a regular basis. But it happened to be our first night in it and after being shut up all day in 90 degree heat it was H-O-T in there! I don't have any idea what kind of amps our garage outlet has and won't pretend to know very much yet about electric in general. But I haven't popped any breakers and we always use a heavy duty extension cord when plugged into the house. Typically it's only plugged in to cool down the fridge a couple days before we leave on a trip and to charge up the battery.

Now at a campground, I have run (in our old pop up) the a/c, fridge, a TV/DVD and a radio when plugged into 30A without issue, along with the occasional coffee maker and blender for frozey drinks.
