Window in door leaking

I have water trickling in and running down the inside of the door from the bottom of the window. What is the fix? Can I just apply some caulk to the window outside. I'm not sure yet if water is coming in from the outside of the window frame or the inside where glass meets the frame. If so what kind of caulk?

Thanks!

Its pretty simple inside the frame either has a rubber gasket or a rope type sealant.Seems we recall some pretty good u tube videos on the subject.Water and RV floors don't like each other for long!

Did you buy your 2018 new? If so, it is under warranty, let Jayco fix it. If a dealer is not handy (seasonal site) call Jayco with your vin number, and ask for a warranty claim, and how to fix it. I am sure there are a few YouTube videos on the subject.

I had ours out once, but do not recall what the sealant was. On our 2012, from the inside you can remove a few screws around the window trim, to gain access, to the glass. You will have to pop the glass out, and reseal.

I've watched a couple. So replacing the butyl tape is the only fix? I have warranty but it would cost me more to transport to dealer than this fix is worth.

Right now the leak is small enough I don't think is getting inside the camper. It was pooled up on the metal floor plate a little, but I suppose if it accumulated enough it might eventually come in if the door seal at the bottom doesn't let it run outside.

Have you checked the screws to make sure all is tight. As you said big waste of time hauling to the dealer for such a small repair, buy a roll of butyl tape, take frame apart, remove old tape, new tape and sandwich back together. Takes less time than hauling to the dealer. https://www.amazon.com/Dicor-BT-1834.../dp/B001FCB4JS

Our '08 Jayco was not sealed with butyl tape but some other sealant. We recently replaced the inside and outside frames since an original outside (weathered and cracked) with the correct number of holes and screws could not be found to match the existing inside. They were about $15 each on Amazon.

When installing the new frames we used a silicon sealant where the glass is held in position on the outside frame and then another bead on the inside edge (circumference) of the outside frame before mounting and installing screws.

Had the same problem on my previous camper. The problems was the screws for the inside trim ring was loose allowing the window to leak, might check that first.

AP products has an install video on the door glass. Don't forget to put a piece of tape on the outside of the window. If you don't once you remove the inside frame the glass will fall out!

Finally talked to the service shop at my dealer. If the screws are all tight they told me to just silicone caulk inside and outside the window frame and is likely what they would do if I brought it in. I asked if I should be replacing the butyl tape to fix it properly and he said a lot of them don't even have that and they don't like the seal they see from the factory. Thus the silicone recommendation.

Sounds like the easy way out for a dealer fix. First I would never use silicone as a sealant, if you ever have to repair that area again nothing sticks to silicone, not even silicone, worst sealant ever. I would take it apart and do it the right way and be done with it, if you want to seal it use OSI QUAD sealant, this is what Jayco uses everywhere but the roof, available at Home Depot/Menards.

It's not them taking easy way out. It's me not wanting to take a seasonal camper in for a cheap fix that would cost me way more in gas than the repair itself.

tsduke03,

I agree, to do it right the existing window/glass assembly should be removed and apply the proper sealant internally...., running sealant around the outer window frame and window IMO can look a little tacky.

You may want to consider replacing the original window/frosted glass assembly with an AP Products Slim Shade. The Slim Shade has the sealant already applied to the components, ready for install.

Here's my install: Post# 71 https://www.jaycoowners.com/forums/f...s-51005-5.html

I’m not buying a new window. Personally I don’t get why a deal that is internal is a good design. Water is going to get in and go somewhere.
