The biggest concern in regard to "free parking" is to find a place that's SAFE!!!!
I remember one trip we stopped late at a Cracker Barrel restaurant and asked about parking over night. They said sure just pull around to the RV parking area. That area was not only dark it was also behind the building (out of sight from the front road) and after 10 PM no one would be around. We thanked them but passed on their invite.
You may not get a 8 hour quiet sleep at a rest stop- big store parking lot or a truck stop, but you should be safer where there's some light and people moving about.
