2015 Seneca Fuel Capacity

I would add, I will still rely on my odometer until I have confidence in the fuel gauge. I also get around 8.5 to 9 miles per gallon when I am towing my Jeep. Sam

Decided to push it a bit. Went 550 miles yesterday before filling up. The last 80 with the low fuel light on solid. Took 59 gallons so 15 gallons left. 9mpg towing our Jeep.

I am curious Dan, where was the fuel gauge pointer when you had 15 gal. of fuel left in the tank?

We used our ScanGauge-D on our first long trip over the 4th of July weekend towing our 8k# tandem enclosed. We averaged about 8.3mpg (according to the unit) in the hills of Kentucky. At about 380mi on the trip, my low fuel light came on.

My ScanGauge said I'd only used 39 gal. (This seemed around consistent with what I had seen out of our Seneca in the past for indicating low fuel and still having plenty). I went ahead and drove it on up to 490 mi on the trip.

We used the genset heavily that weekend and while moving so I was a bit cautious of going much over what the scangauge said we used as I had no definitive way of 1) knowing how much the onan gulped down 2) my pre-trip fillup was at a passenger filling station and I had to turn the rig around to get the driver's tank filled; so some self-balancing occurred while I turned around. (it said 59 gal used when we finally stopped).

When it was all said and done, I filled 64 gal into the tank. For the last 50 -75 mi, the in-dash gauge was buried on E (really unnerving). I cannot explain how much I despise a gauge that's so inaccurate.

The inaccurate gage drives me nuts too. With everyone having the same problem I'm sure someone will eventually figure out the problem and a cure.

It was buried on E. I knew I had fuel left but don't like to drive like that.

You sure have a lot more courage than I do. I get nervous when I see the fuel gauge drop below 1/4 tank.

I was once told many many years ago that if you ran a diesel out of gas that it would damage the motor. Is that true with the modern diesel motors and with out Senecas?

I don't think it will cause damage to the motor, unless they were talking about lack of fuel lubricating the delivery systems. They can be a pain to get re-primed, however. -Definitely something you would want to avoid, nonetheless.

We finally made a 360 mile one way trip with the new dash and the fuel gauge is still way off. I think made Sam's Freightliner dealer might have the right idea of bending the senders arm. We gave up on the Seneca and traded it in on a Dynamax DX3, still Freightliner but different tanks and dash, drove 360 miles home and gauge seems ok.

I looked at my tanks. They have stamped on the tank around the fill nozzle....
"Fill to no more than 40 US Gallons." on the right side and 34 on the left.

Then underneath that is states...
"95% Liquid Capacity"

So, the old question is, 95% of 74 gallons? Or is 74 gallons equal to 95% and thus the terminology "Fill to no more than 40 US Gallons"?

So worse case Math logic here is....
74 gallon x 95% x 6mpg = 422 miles
7mpg would equate to 492 miles

One question I have: Will the generator cut off at 25% tank capacity?
I had this on another Motorhome send had it happen to me but I haven't seen anything documenting that on the Seneca.

We were told that the generator did have the fill hose higher up in the tank so it would not run the tank empty. We got 9mpg before we started towing a Yukon and 8.5 after. I surprised that you are only getting 6.

I have the same issue on my 2015 TS with 9000 miles. The most fuel I have got even with a low fuel warning was 43 or 46 gallons. Normal fills are about 38 gallons or less. I would like more. I had a class A that was capable of over 200 gallons even with 600HP it could still get 7-8-9-10 mpg, now that was serious range. I think I get about 8-10 now on flat land in the Seneca.

Has anyone put a stick in the tank to measure the depth when the low fuel light comes on?

Could it be that the fuel gauge has a built in safety margin for things like steep grades?

My understanging is that there is no sump in those tanks. Just a fitting somewhere close to the bottom. I was just thinking about that earlier this week while starting up some long 6-7% grades with 1/4 tank showing on the gauge.

If there was only a few gallons sloshing around in there wouldn't it suck air?

I think it's more a case of one fuel measuring system used on a whole bunch of different tank sizes and configurations.

I assume you have a Freightliner M-2 Seneca and you would be buying the 9-pin Blue-Fire plug. Is that correct?
Have you had yours long enough to see results?
How are you using the info?
