2017 Seneca whining sound

While travelling today in the hills of Tennessee, I noticed for the first time, when using cruse control, whenever I topped a hill and the unit sort of coasted that I could hear a whining noise coming apparently from the rear of the coach. Is this a normal sound or am I possibly starting to have u-joint or differential problems?

to be perfectly honest... I doubt that I could hear anything coming from the rear of our Seneca at highway speed. (and be sure it was from the rear end of our motorhome)

We have had things crash and fall "inside" right behind my drivers seat that came from the overcab bunk... that I thought were from the back of our Seneca.

I have asked Stacy to go back and see where that noise was coming from... and she surprises me with her answers.

Just like waking each morning and wondering what “will hurt today”, each trip we wonder what new noise willl appear? We will get a new noise that will make me crazy and as we trouble shoot it, it will go away. We have come to the conclusion these are heavy duty trucks, not luxury vehicles and annoying noises will come and go

That being said, I don’t recall a whining sound asa y you describe. Is it only when using cruise?

Turbo charger? Normally don’t hear it but sometimes you can hear it sing.

I agree With Mark S. I have had my Seneca for 3 1/2 years and 32,000 miles. We will at times have a new noise encroach on us and as Mark said it will drive me buggy for a while and then it just disappears. I have come to believe it is nature of the brute.

That said, we do like our Seneca. Sam

I appreciate all the comments and yes, I should have said the sound appears to be coming from the rear of the coach. What initially caught my attention is that the sound only seem to exist when there is little or no torque on the driveshaft/rear end whether or not using the cruise control Maybe as has been said, just a new noise & maybe it will go away.

The noise you are probably hearing is the Ring & Pinion in the rear axle unloading and in a coasting state, they will put off a slight whine. This is not uncommon and remember this is a truck chassis. I hear it once in a while but doesnt bother me as I drove Freightliner FL70's for years and they all do the same thing.

Hello everyone... I have a 2016 with 15000 miles and it is in Freightliner for service and I have had the same noise. They took the diff out and said the pinion was set a little too high and there is premature wear on the pinion. They are going to try to have it warrantied

They did find that the ring was worn prematurely from the pinon set to high... My 3 year warranty excluded the axles which is BS if you ask me, however because of the low mileage of 18000 freightliner is covering 50%. It will cost me $2268

Warranty info really sucks. I better go look at mine. Will be interested to hear if this solved the whining sound.

Hey Guys...... This whining noise is from the pinion being shimmed improperly to the ring gear. Freightliner confirmed it replaced it and the noise if 100% gone, amazing how quiet it is now. I have a 2016 TS
