My gas-electric water heater will work fine for 3-4 days on the gas mode, then for no reason it will not work at all. But sometimes when it does this if you turn the gas mode button off and the electric button on for approx. 30-45 seconds then turn it off , and turn the gas button on it will light up and work just fine next 3-4 days. To the best of my knowledge the only component that they share is the thermostat on the tank. Please help me understand what is going on…Thanks for any reply’s…..

A couple of simple items to check.
Check that no wasp nests, etc. in the intake and exhaust areas.
Check pilot light is clean and pilot light is bright blue and near sensor.
While you are in there clean the pilot light end, spiders seem to love it!
The pilot light sensor can fail. Look at some youtubes on that problem and make sure it is near enough the flame keeps it properly heated or it will shut down the system for safety reasons.

I think what helps is to always try to post the make and model of your water heater. Then we can help google up some ideas.

I'm guessing its a Dometic/Atwood.
