Ah! I think I understand now. When the slide comes in, the "bed frame" the mattress is on compresses? Looking at the photos with the slides in and out there are ~5 floor boards between the bed the bathroom wall in both photos.
With a compressed bed frame you'd need a shorter mattress with the slide in. We thought the bed frame just shifted as the slide came in and got closer to the bathroom wall. We were struggling to understand why you needed a folding mattress if the bed frame just shifted.
