30 amp to 50 amp

I have a 2021 jayco greyhawk 31f. Alwsys camped where there was a 30 amp hookup. I will be camping first time where campground only has 50 amp. Is it safe to connect with a 30amp female adapter to a 50amp male adapter.

several posts on this question if you search above, a 50 to 30 plug/dongle uses only part of the power and internally the plug has no connection between one of the plug posts to the 30 amp plug side.
Many, including me, have one as some 30 amp sockets are worn out or broken!

The excellent drawing above explains it perfectly!

Many RV'ers ar confused with this subject.

Besides, All your breakers would trip if an electrical device tried to draw more than 30 amps, unless you replaced them with 50 amp breakers.

Just like a house equipped with 15, 20, and 40 amp breakers. If you plug a device into a wall socket that draws more than the breaker that the wall socket is protected with (breaker), it trips, which prevents the device and wiring from starting a fire. The absolute worse thing you can do is to install a breaker or fuse that is rated higher than the wiring to the outlet. Never do that! Car fires occure because folks install a higher rated fuse into a fuse holder because the fuse kept blowing. The wire heats up and melts the wiring insulation, then a fire could result.

You did not replace any of the breakers with a higher rating, right?

Get yourself a good quality adaptor and all is fine.

Put a hand around it every now and again to see it if it feels warmer than the cord. I have a collection of several different adapters that at some point will save your weekend!

Hey RogerR, your description was right but the image wasn't accurate. Like you said, the adapter only routes power from one 50 amp 120 volt circuit to the 30 amp plug, not both as is shown in the diagram you posted.

The problem regarding accuracy is due to incorrect terminology. What is proper is to start at the source (ie the Park Pedestal) and if it is 50a and you have a 30a RV, then you are using a 50a to 30a adapter. If your RV is 50a and the pedestal is 30a, then you are using a 30a to 50a adapter. (not that SmokerBill or some others don't already know this)

So the image (in post #4) is accurate for a 30a to 50a adapter (not 50a to 30a), it is very important to know the difference if you are ever replacing a plug as the two possibilities are not wired the same. Never connect the 50a outlet's two legs when going from 50a to 30a (hopefully that makes sense to everyone). ~CA

I carry both and have used them a good many times. For instance on a 30a pedestal I have used the 30-50 to attach my 50a EMS to the source if I am in a 30a site. Once the plug on my 50a cord was bad and I used a Marinco 50a to 30a to adapt it to a 30a extension cord overnight until the I could get a new cord end. Even have 15-30a and several more than have kept me powered up.

Get all three...this way you are covered, even when the trailer is at home, and you need lights. Your A/C would not work off of a 15amp connection though.

If you have a 30a RV and using a 50to30 adapter but the pedestal doesn't have 50a then you can use a 30to50 in front of your 50to30 adapter. Simple... ~CA
