4000 Onan generator

The generator on my 2018 Class C motorhome runs fine when RV is not moving. The problem is that when you are moving the generator cuts off. Does anyone have same issue? The fuel pump, filter and carburetor have been serviced. I found an article about faulty dipstick and getting too much oil in unit will cause it to stop running but my unit will run hours while unit is parked. A tech is working on unit and he jokingly told me my unit is possessed. Open for advice.

Hello, We leave our onan 4000 Generator running sometimes if cooling is required 30 min before stopping. (Las Vegas) The Generator has a light on the start switch. Read code when stopping.

Remember on purpose it runs on Gas and the tube in 1/8 off the bottom of the gas tank.

I found about codes earlier. Got bad gas in unit and had to have unit serviced. Found out about codes then. We are 2nd owners and have not used motorhome a lot. Bought right before pandemic last year. Have owned 3 different motorhomes with basically same Onan generator but have not had issue we have now.

Hot outside temps? There is a thread about adding a vent in the door.

Actually have a vented cover. Only quits when RV is moving, so should be getting more air. Thanks for reply.

Oil level OK? If oil is low and sloshing could cause shutdown.

Also someone mentioned dip stick was wrong and could possibly have too much oil in unit which will cause shut down.

I guess being in Arizona for 50+ years not finding it hot enough to have to run the A/C while driving is a plus. I have yet to find a reason to fire up the genny to get the air going while running down the road.

We leave Phx and temps are 110+ in some cases when we leave for high country. So I guess I can't feel your pain LOL

Sounds like a problem with the gas tank pick up for the generator. I’m guessing that you’re pretty level when running the generator while stationary. Maybe try parking at a moderate downhill angle and run the generator and if all is fine, try parking uphill and see what happens. Other possibility is that wiggly wires are causing a ground issue. Usually, under coach wiring is a mess.

A service tech has the unit now and he is saying the same. The unit was not running and he got it running by cleaning pump, filter and carb. I think you are on point with my ptoblem
