Advice from Experienced Travelers

We plan to travel from our home in Norfolk, VA to Phoenix, AZ this upcoming November, staying December and January, before returning to Norfolk around the second week of February.

I was wondering if the experienced RVers out there have any advice as to the route, what to see, what to avoid, etc.

Come back on the Southern most route. Fall colors may still be pretty on the trip there.

No advice for getting there since we haven't made it out west but enjoy the journey.

What to see and what to avoid over that long of a route is a pretty loaded question. There is a lot to see but considering this year's weather has been about as messed up as Covid and all connected to it, this would be a difficult route to plan that far in advance.

You can expect winter weather through most of New Mexico, and Arizona. If it does not happen, great, but you are traveling over the Divide and if you take the route through Flagstaff you are at 7500 feet and above. November can be nice, or it can be wicked. January and February can be down right dangerous. If you do the southern route through lower New Mexico and Arizona it can still be winter travel but it is generally better.

You will need to be a little more specific about what you wish to see. I cannot help you before you get to New Mexico but I will tell you that our "snowbirds" do not leave here until April because it is still winter in the rest of the world when it is nice here.

The other issue is Covid. We are on a downward trend right now but that is not what is predicted. If what is predicted, happens you may find many businesses closed or operating at 1/2 to 1/4 capacity. Establishments are just now getting permission to reopen at much reduced capacity. In all honesty what we do not need during the winter is an influx of people from other locations. We had one of the highest infection rates in the world here. I don't like being a naysayer but it could go south here in a hurry.

First, stay in Mesa at Mesa Sunset RV park. 480-984-6731. It's on Broadway across the street from a major grocery store. Fry's. It is in the middle of everything. They are new management and are great. They even park your trailer for you.

Next, stay south like I10 or I20. I40 gets snow and ice storms.

If they are even open. I suggest planning way in advance. Most of these businesses depended upon Canadians and right now it is really iffy if the border will even open.
