Allison transmission locking gear?

We bought a 2014 Seneca 37TS in 11/2013, and are on our second short trip. When accelerating or just cruising (usually, but not always uphill), the transmission drops into a lower gear. I am reduced to and stuck at 35 or 45 mph, the rpms are high (2,500 - 2,800), and the engine is revving. I back off the accelerator, but that doesn't seem to help. I have power, but the noise is is a high-pitched whine and I'm in a low gear. Finally there is an air release sound and everything goes back to normal.

The rpms are very high at highway speeds, too, unless we are in OD. Any suggestions? We will take it to the dealer to look at, but we have some driving ahead of us in the next two days. I'm a woman who used to take engines apart before things got complicated, so be easy on me!

I'm on Tapatalk so can't see truck details. Something is wrong though. Post up truck specs. My 2007 LBZ duramax Allison pulls like crazy.

If you have not done it yet check the fluid level. Alison is the best truck transmission on the market but that does not mean they dont have problems at times. Also make sure you only use Transynd?? fluid in the transmission it is made for the Alison.

Although I don't have experience with the 37TS's Allison (yet... we pickup our 2015 37TS ***TOMORROW***), my 2005 Chevy 2500HD has an Allison transmission. The "high pitched whine" you hear ***COULD BE*** the transmission coolant fan that Allison has. It sounds like a jet engine and the first time I heard it I had NO CLUE what the sound was and thought my RPMs were skyrocketing (which they weren't, it was simply a coolant fan). I don't know why the transmission would down shift on you though - definitely get your mechanic to take a look at that. Seann45 is right... Allison is an AWESOME transmission, but is SOMEWHAT particular on the fluids that are used. Good luck!!

I always run my Seneca in overdrive...always! Even pulling my 24ft car trailer. The noise you are hearing is the fan which takes a lot of power to run. It feels like you have no power compared to normal. Then you hear the air sound and the cooling fan freewheels, power returns.I bet your engine temp is 200+ when you experience this. You are NOT in low gear the truck will not go 45mph in low gear. I usually cruise at 62/63 mph with the cruise control on as it does not downshift even on some pretty good hills. My rpm is right at 1600/1700 cruising. I found if I dont use the cruise control I have too much trans busyness/shifting. I'm assuming a different ecu shifting strategy cruise vs no cruise. Sounds to me like your RV is working exactly like its supposed to.
