Atwood Hot Water Heater issue

Thinking I had a bad electric element in my Hot Water heater I ordered a new heating element. My heater still heats great with Propane. When I removed the heater from the coach, I found the white lead wire off one side of the element completely burned in half and the wire nut completely melted. I guess my question is: will a burned out element cause this or could running the electric heater element with no water in the tank cause that much heat? I am little concerned about just replacing the heating element without feeling confident that a bad element caused this problem.

A bad connection could have caused it. But if the element is burned it means a short in the element it self. You just have to remove it and replace it with a new one.
Take a picture of the old one and post it. Be sure when you install the new one to tighten the screws firmly.

Use an ohm meter to tell if the element is good or bad.

I did check it with an OHM meter and it shows that there is continuity, however I have not removed it yet...hope to do that as soon as my new one arrives. I am going to replace no matter its condition.

When a pole has been hot in a melted condition you have to replaced the accessory, otherwise it would be a fire hazard. That's why in Industrial panels everything get a regular infrared scan for defect equipment.

I had to replace the element in our last RV after finding it would not heat on electric. I don't have the picture available any longer but the element had eroded (broken) off about an inch from the connection. Through the small hole I could not retrieve the broken end but left it in the tank and no harm done.
Easy enough job using the large socket-type wrench made for both home and mobile water heater elements.

New element is in...I now have hot water using electric......Easy fix! If I can figure out how to post pictures of the old element, I will.

I might add that if I ever have to remove my Water Heater again, I think I would extend the 110 wiring a couple of feet so that the connections can be made with the heater outside of the coach. On mine, the heating element is on the back and it was very difficult to get to the 110 wires and make good connections. Just a thought!
