Awful Caulk Job - how to make it “better”

Previous owner “sealed“ everything, but it in an incredibly sloppy way Subject says it all. What’s the best way of getting this to look a little more decent?

This is what I recommend, at least as a first step. ~CA

I used one of these el cheapo's to gently scrape off sealant. When it became dull I ran it across sandpaper to refresh the edge.

+1 on plastic razor blades. You'll also find they are really handy for several other 'fix's' you run into around the house.

Once you get that nasty off, and want it looking good, never seal the bottoms of lights window frames, or bad door frames. Then caulk by pushing the caulk tube, not pulling. Then immediately spray with canned spray glass cleaner and wipe smooth and excess off with finger. The cleaner keeps it from sticking except where you already put it.

It probably depends on what type of caulk was used, but after scraping I went over the residue with Paint Thinner and it cleaned up well.

I wanted to thunk the person who did the awful caulk job on mine.
But the I remembered it was me.

Go back with clear caulk. Watch a few YouTube videos on caulking.

Clear Lexel is what I have used for that type caulking.

Looks like he probably had the caulking gun in one hand and a beer in the other...

Oh, and windows shouldn't be caulked around the bottom half. Just from the middle of one side, up and across the top and halfway down the other side. That allows water to escape if any somehow gets in.

Holy smokes! The lesson here is “never caulk with mud”

Seriously, is it flexible at all? Or rock hard? I’ll second the plastic razor blades and plastic paint scrapers. But you do have to be careful even with those to not scratch the fiberglass. Acetone might help get the residue off when you get down to that. I’ve even found gasoline worked pretty well in cleaning up silicone a previous owner used on our sailboat gelcoat. I’d try it on an inconspicuous place first, though. Good luck.
