Battery Maintenance

I just watched a RV Repair Club video where they discussed the use of a battery maintenance device called a BatteryMINder. The device is supposed to suppress or correct sulfating and keep the battery properly charged. Has anyone had experience with a device like this? I'm wondering if it is worth the cost since it is supposed to increase battery life by a factor of 2 or 3. I'd appreciate your thoughts.

I use a battery minder Jr. on my single battery but it does not claim to de-sulfate a lead battery. I would also like to know if there is any reason to upgrade mine. ( 3 year old group 27 flooded battery).

I've been using a JR for several years now. There are 3 lights, top is correct polarity, middle is a flashing blue light that indicates it is de-sulficating the battery, whatever that means and bottom is charging/charged. I'm still using the original Excide deep cycle battery that came with my camper 8 years ago. I've had it off the minder for about a week now and standing voltage is 12.6v. It has now become a challenge on how long I can keep this battery going.

TC,
Thanks for the info. I have four batteries (boat and RV) that I need to maintain all winter. I'm going to continue to look into this to see if it will do the trick.

Correction, mine is a BatteryMinder Plus, not a junior. Just went out and checked.

Yeah, I got mine confused as well, I have a battery tender jr I used on other things. But I can’t find where it de-sulficates, so I purchased a battery minder 1510 today (comes with a 10 yr warranty to boot).

I have a couple of Battery Minders + that desulfate (Ford PSD + Trailer). I also have 3 off brand (also 1/2 price) battery tenders, that also desulfate (two golf carts and lawn tractor). They all do what the were designed do.

I can keep my RH24B plugged in while in home port. But I bought a NOCO Genius 1amp battery minder for the chassis battery while in port. It has 4 stage charging and is compact. Can add charger lead length as needed as an option purchase. It is a convent wall wart charger that will plug into my rig 120vac. Use it as needed.

Look up Pulsetech.
Don't have one but maybe someday. Power or solar, can't go wrong.

I have been using a Battery Minder + on my 2 motorcycles and my lawnmowers for several years now. I also installed a Battery Minder (like the one in the rv repair club video) on our travel trailer batteries (2) . I really like them. They seem to work like they advertise. The one in the camper does the maintenance when ever plugged in. My trailer is plugged in all the time when home. I just check the fluids every so often and keep them topped off. I have had no problems with them.

I've been using a BatteryTender brand for several years, switching it from the trailer battery to the motorcycle battery every month or so. I recently got a BatteryMinder to keep in the garage, and it works well, but seems to take longer to get to the maintenance mode. Probably a difference in the circuitry or programming, Both work, just a little differently.

I use a "trickle charger" or "float charger"on all of my batteries that sit for any length of time. The average life of the batteries is extended 2 to 3 times what they would normally last. THe battery minder brand is good but comes at a premium price. Harbor Freight sells these "trickle chargers" for less than $10 https://www.harborfreight.com/automa...ger-64284.html
They are not designed to charge a dead battery but simply maintain the battery when not in use.

Solar Option

If you have or are considering solar, some systems come with a controller the handles all battery maintenance functions. I got mine from Go Power. I have never had batteries last as long as they do now when charged by the solar power system.

I also own a stand alone Pulsetech batter charger and maintainer. It has revived several batteries for me.

I have at least 8 BatteryMinders that I have been using for years on all my equipment. I have one on each of my 2 generators, my riding mower, pop-up camper, Case Skid Steer loader, my Super-Duty, Kawasaki Mule, and a solar version on a spare vehicle that seldom gets started. Northern Tools regularly has them on sale for $24.99(on sale now), occasionally they have them on sale for $19.99. This is the current model that is Temp compensating

I used one continuously on my Skid Steer loader starting in 2011 with an Optima Red Top battery($250). I just replaced that battery in 2019 and its manf. date was 2009. You can add all sorts of connectors for convenience, I installed a flush mount receptacle on the skid steer that has a dust cover while I use it. The benefits from that one battery paid for all the units I have purchased over the years. It is just nice to hop on your mower in April after it has been sitting since November and it fire up without hesitation(No ethanol fuel helps too). It can be used with most types of batteries(flooded, sealed, AGM,etc) and can be daisy-chained to cover multiple batteries at one time. I buy them as Christmas gifts for my neighbors for their UTV's that sit all winter. Obviously, I highly recommend them.
