Best Coolant

Hi folks! Wondering what is the best coolant for the Seneca C5500 diesel?

Whatever has the prettiest looking label. Coolants are manufactured to the same ASTM standard. Chemically they are all the same.

Some coolants don't mix with others and may cause trouble. Should be listed on the owners manual. My jeep uses a special kind and the old green stuff will not work. Call the dealer for your brand engine and ask the service desk to look it up. You don't need it from them but should meet those specs.

Hmmm...
Coolants are very different.
Best advice is use what's recommended by the manufacturer. Usually, but not always, the color of the fluid will determine what type it is. The old green stuff was EG and worked great in old vehicles but can't be used in modern cars because it's not compatible with today's gaskets. The newer red anti freeze (Dexcool) works good in new vehicles but can't be used in the old cars because it deteriorates lead joints in the copper rads. I use yellow anti freeze in my older vehicles because it's compatible with everything. My newer vehicles will get whatever they came with.

Stupid question. How on earth do you find out what color it is?

I would call your local dealer (I would guess Cummins/Freightliner ?) and confirm with them. The newer engines in vehicles today have less tolerance for incorrect coolant than engines of the past. I know folks are joking around on here but as a daily diesel driver my experience is that not using the correct coolant can cause major issues.

According to the Prestone web site, their yellow antifreeze is 100% backward-compatible.

I don't go cheap on coolant. My PSD had problems and many said the Ford coolant was the problem. I don't know but when the repairs were no longer covered by the extended warranty, I changed it out for a national brand and no more problems with coolant lately.

Lots of discussion about the Ford coolant in the old 6.0 PSD engine. Mine is clocking around 145K and still ticking better than ever.

Like I said, don't use the color to determine what type of coolant you have because different technologies use similar colors. I use Amsoil propylene-glycol on my older vehicles which is tinted yellow. It's expensive, but can be used in anything and won't attack gaskets. If your vehicle is fairly new, use what's recommended by the manufacturer so you don't void any warranty.

I am guessing you went with the ELC coolant, I did that to mine along with a bypass filter, never had a oil cooler issue again. Sadly the head gasket was gone and after doing all that work the high pressure oil feed tube came off (I forgot to use loctite on the screws) I was fed up putting money into it and SWMBO wanted me to buy a brand new superduty who am I to argue.

To the OP the best advice is to talk to the manufacture and use the coolant they recommend.
