Brake lines on class c
I have a 2021 Greyhawk 30Z with 12500 miles. Has anyone had an issue with the section (@5’) of brake lines that Jayco has installed when they stretch the frame to build the coach. The brake lines they use are complete garbage, and were totally rusted out causing me to lose my brakes on I-4 in Fl. This information was verified by gator Ford in Seffner, Florida. The brake lines that Ford originally installs in the E450 frame were perfect. No sign of wear or rust of any kind. I have a video taken by gator Ford showing 5 feet of completely rusted brake lines. So far, Jayco has denied any responsibility for these substandard brake lines. In addition, Jayco is the one that has the work done to stretch the frame. Please advise if you’ve had an issue with this happening. My coach only has 12,500 miles on it, has never been parked near the ocean, and has never been in snow or cold weather, (no salt). If anyone would like to see the video from Ford, I can send it in as well.

I would file a report with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, your rig is probably not the only one affected.

As Robbbyr said file it with the NHTSA. MORryde is one company that JAYCO use to use, at least a while back for the stretch. Whoever did it may have gotten a batch of bad lines as a result of all the supply chain issues.
Did you talk directly to Motorized Customer Service about it?

I noticed the same on my 2017 Greyhawk. It is on my list to change out that section of line.
Stupid place to save $$$. Your story of a failure in so little time / miles tells me to change it out right away. DNM

I checked mine on a 2016. The lines do have rust on them after the original ford lines. Last 5 feet or so. It appears to be surface rust, it wasn’t flaking or bubbling. The ford lines appear to be coated and show absolutely no rust.

I just replaced this line today. A friend who is a retired auto mechanic came over and he made up a stainless steel replacement. We bled the brakes and I'm good th go. He was a little surprised that Jayco would use such cheep material in a critical application. I just shook my head. 2020 26XD 27,000 miles and that line looked like it was 20 years old. Again this forum comes through.

When I bought my 2019 Greyhawk last year, when I had the Maryland inspection done they saw the rusted brake line extension and said I had to replace it. Glad I did! I think every Jayco class C owner should have this checked/replaced!

yea, i got the rust too. doesn't seem like a need to replace immediately, but soon, just to be safe. I'll have to look and see what it costs. I can do it, but bleeding brakes in a pain.

anyone know if these are AN3 or AN4 size lines?
3/8" nut for 3/16" line (AN3)
7/16 nut for 1/4" line (AN4)
Was thinking of buying a line like the below and just doing it myself.
https://www.amazon.com/Braided-Stain.../dp/B01N9VRIZ3
I'd guess the larger since it has larger brakes, but the line did look like a standard car size which is AN3.

Buy them both and return the one that is not correct.

Your brake lines don't look all that bad from the section you shared an image of. When (if) they do get worse then I highly recommend not using flexible brake lines except where needed (right at the wheels where a flexible line is required). I would suggest Nickle Copper lines and purchase a tubing bender and flare tool. Several reasons why I recommend this, one being that braided lines allow for a little more expansion under pressure which with a long run of the hose adds up to the point where the brake pedal would likely feel spongy. Another concern is the fittings, as hydraulic lines require special fittings that are installed with a costly hydraulic line crimper tool. You really wouldn't want to purchase a longer braided hose than needed and have to coil up the excess.
In any case, I wouldn't worry with what I saw in your image, maybe coat it with fluid film every year or two. ~CA
FYI, here is a video, once (if) your lines get as bad as the two on the left, then I would change them out.

Brake lines are rarely AN. They are a double flare. I have not measured mine, but I'm hoping to be able to purchase a correct length pre-made. If not, I have a flaring tool. I also think that many auto shops will custom make one. Take your old one in for fitting.

Thanks Craig. After looking at that video it doesn't look too bad. Looks like just some time with some high grit paper a little paint/fluid film and it should be ok. Just looks worse than it really is. Thanks for sending it along.

I didn't take an after pic, but it really wasn't as bad as I thought. Surface rust. Sanded it all down and spray painted. Used some gloves and paper towel to get the paint all around it.
