If you take off a front wheel, there is an inspection area in the caliper that you can get a good view of the pads and like a tire tread, look up the pad thickness new and what you have now. I wouldn't be surprised if with very little mountain driving that you may easily have another 20,000 miles give or take, maybe more.
On the other hand, if you are a bit mechanical, imo, you can't really go wrong by changing the pads sooner than later for sure, and a good time to repack the wheel bearings as well. ~CA
