Considering Jayco Melbourne 24k, Questions
Hello All,
I've been searching for a MBS based class C, after going to the Pomona show last weekend, I think I narrowed it down to the 24k, but have some questions if you could help!
1) After looking at every brand, Jayco and Winnebago stood out in quality. Cabinets, fit and finish, exterior doors/latches all seems much nicer then Forest River, Dynamax, Thor (for sure). Am I fair in my assessment? Is Jayco quality considered up there?
2)If the quality of the winne and the Jayco are similar, then it appears the difference in price is a lot of the features that come with the winne. Tankless, special material cabinets, roller shades, slide out protections awnings, etc. Is that what the difference comes down to between the two and prices? I'm very handy, so I'm comfortable adding a lot of those things.
3) What's a typical CCC of the 24k in real life people are seeing?
4) I'm considering used, and I don't see any significant differences between 2016, 2017, 2018. Does anyone know of any major differences that I should be concerned about or are worth paying more for a newer model?
5)Any issues with the 24k layout/style? Any major issues with the Jayco Melbourne I should be aware of?

Welcome to the JOF. We purchased a 2017 Melbourne 24L. We had also looked at the Minnie Winnie. We felt the Jayco was a better quality vehicle. Additionally, we like that the Melbourne is on a Mercedes 3500 Sprint chassis and uses diesel fuel. We have been getting better mileage on it that we have read others getting with a conventional engine on the Ford or Chevy chassis.
Regarding tankless water heaters, I believe Jayco is going away from them because of many issues experienced by those who had them.
The only major change that I know of between the 2017 and the 2018 is that the 2018 Jayco has incorporated a new infotainment system that includes a Garmin navigation system.
Good luck, whichever way you go.

Thanks for the welcome and insight. When I was referring to the winnie, I'm talking the MBS 24G, so a little more apples to apples, would your answer be the same?
Don't care about infotainment, so that's fine.

Welcome to the forum. There are little problems with finish quality that I have found with Jayco but I imagine it is like that with most brands. Jayco seems to use the same components as more expensive models so fit and finish wasn't a big concern as far as the interior. My main issue with the 24K is the bed discussed in this thread.
https://www.jaycoowners.com/forums/f...ess-49622.html
I don't remember the #'s on the CCC but when I weighed mine as we normally have it loaded we were still below the max. AS far as differences between the latter year models, there was a discussion here about a shower door change but I don't have any issues with mine as is.
If you are going diesel and a smaller footprint then you cant go wrong with the MB chassis. It is more expensive to get serviced but so are all diesels. Service locations are limited as well if you need your unit scanned with a computer.
Good luck and safe travels.

Yes, our answer would be the same we still would have gone with the Jayco. We felt the Winnebago Navion & View were too cramped. Never did see a Minnie Winnie with the Mercedes chassis.

I have always felt that Winnie builds a better box, but you get less content for it.

I read that Jayco has introduced their 2018+ Prestige version of the Melbourne. This upgrade features a more contemporary interior design, upgraded appliances, large front cabover window and some other features. You can find some pics and dealer info here... https://www.rvtrader.com/listing/201...TIGE-123328639
I don't see this on Jayco's website yet and not sure of availability.

Agreed.
But I also felt like I succumbed to the Model Home trap. Walk into any model home these days and the staging and upgrades make it hard to think about what really matters -- construction quality.
The Winnies we walked in were severely lacking in panache compared to a Jayco.

Thanks for all the insight.
Anyone have comments on the CCC?
Any issues with keeping the bedroom cool in hot climates?

One big difference for us in the later 2017 and beyond is that they have eliminated the back window for a headboard. We love our window. View has a much smaller frig and no access doors on the booth seats. We like the classic wood interior vs European look of the View. We like frameless windows, large entry door window, large microwave/convection oven, price...yes, just about everything better than View! 20,000 miles and counting. We love it.

Just completed our first full season in a 2017 Melbourne 24K. Best rig we have owned, did a combination of CG and boondocking, and couldn't be happier.Ride was awesome, setup simple and experienced no problems with the quality of the build or warranty work getting done for minor problems. Averaged 17 mpg and that was always with full watertank for stops along the way,. Go for the 24K, you will be glad you did.

WOW, would love to know how you managed 17mpg. We've been around 13.5 doing 60mph on the highways. The only thing I can think of that would affect our mpg is using AC since we live in the desert SW.

I guess what it comes down to is; it is only my wife and I, probably no where near weight capacity but have all the essentials including extra propane (20 lb). A/C on 80% of the time, always on cruise control while on highway/interstate normally 60-65 mph, and of course clean spark plugs LOL

On the 2-month trip we're on right now, we've been averaging 13 towing a Jeep with full tanks. We go between 55 and 62 depending on conditions. Without the tow bet we'd be at 16-17.

I actually like the headboard idea! I live where's it hot, and like to sit up in bed.
Are there any issues cooling down the bedroom in a hot area? One person here mentioned they are in the southwest, I like to sleep cold, is the ducting going back to the bedroom sufficient?
Can anyone post actual CCC numbers from their stickers?
I'm pretty sure this is what I want, but having a hard time finding something in my budget. This is pushing it price wise and there aren't many used options!

There is ducting in the bedroom which can be adjusted by louvers. There is an AC duct in the bathroom but no heat duct, who we feel is a design flaw. Sorry, don't know what a CCC is. We live in Wyoming so travel a lot in the southwest and are always comfortable unless temps reach over 100. Then the AC struggles - 13,500 BTU. If CCC has anything to do with storage, exterior storage is 40.3. Gross vehicle weight rating is 11,030. Hitch is 5,000 lbs. Gross combined weight rating is 15,250.

My Son and I bought 24K's on the same day last May. His is a 2017 and mine is a 2018. The 2018 arrived at the dealer the day we went to buy. The only difference is the infotainment center. His is a Jensen, mine is a Garmin.
We are both getting 15+ mpg. Our first trip was a boondocking run deep into the Sierra Nevada mountains way back on dirt roads. Other then crappy little things like wood edgings falling off we both really like the rigs.

Have noticed that the 2018's don't have the glass shower door. Ours is an early 2017 with the glass. Just curious - did your son's 2017 still have glass? Other than that, everything looks pretty much the same for 2018.

My sons shower door is glass, ours is a curtain with a curtain rod that curves at the top to give better shoulder room.

Most favorite on our Melbourne: Good engine power and super smooth transmission.
Least favorite: Not enough outdoor storage space.
That said, we love it. Ours is the 24M, with the Murphy bed. We believe that a fixed-in-place bed in small RVs consumes too much space. The Murphy bed solves that issue.
We have put about 4k miles on it in seven months. Get 12-15 mpg, and we do not drive fast............I too wish I knew how others are getting 17.......
